The Christians came off a successful road trip with four out of five wins, but have lost four since returning almost two weeks ago. The Christian squad has been setting several outstanding by Gary Spitler records while playing thus far. Doug Williams, a senior from Mt, Airy, MD, broke the career home run Elon College record last week which was held by Bill Dunn with 16, set in 1972. Williams now has 17 career home runs to his credit and every home run scored the remainder of this season will add to that record. Williams also holds the most stolen bases record of 47. Elon, 12-8 and 2-3 overall and in the conference respectively, is a team which has had the problem of errors and miscues lingering over them all season. The Christians have had tremendous hitting, however, which has been a big asset to the outcome of several of their games. Elon ranks in vailing places in a Carolinas Conference stats report of April 12. Tommy Vaughn, catcher for the Christians, is lied for second in the conference for home runs. Chuck Lindsay is third in the conference in stolen base.s. Tommy Vaughn is third in doubles and fifth in RBI's. Pitcher Lou Williams ranks fourth in strikeouts while Danny Gonnella in second in era's with a 1.21. Bill Devaney and Gene Drumright lead the batting averages for the Christians. Elon leads all seven teams in the errors category with 53. The Elon batters are 12-8 overall and 2-3 in conference action (as of 4-12-76). At this point, the team batting average stands at .334, ranking first in the conference. The team pitching ERA rose from a 1.13 to 3.28. The team fielding average currently stands at .929. That the Christians do not lead in several categories now does not mean that they are not a sound and good ball club. Supporting a 12-8 record the Christians will go into conference action about every two days until the end of the season. Elon has a team which could go on to the national tournaments. Summer League Elon College will participate in a summer baseball program starting in June. Teams playing in the summer league include: Appalachian State, Atlantic Christian. Campbell. East Carolina, Elon, Louisburg, Methodist. UNC-CH, and UNC-W. The Fighting Christians hope to be competitive in this, their first summer league season. After posting eight wins. Coach Jerry Tolley feels that his club is capable of going to the national tournament. Several players have contributed tremendously to this year's team. Glenn Smith is the Christians' number one man while Bob Strange is number two. Collins Terry number three, Rick Frankel number four, and Mike DeLuise and James Griffeth. Both DeLuise and Griffeth have lost one in singles play, but "their overall performances have been great," according to Coach Tolley. The Christians have two crucial matches in the near future with Atlantic Christian College and High Point. "Doubles competition has been strong among our club this season also," explained coach Tolley. Smith and Strange make up double one, DeLuise and Terry doubles two, and Frankel and Griffeth doubles Coach Jerry Tolley commented, "We have not had a team such as this since I've been coach at Elon. 1 believe we can go on to the national tournament this year." "Freshman David Clowers is a good player and we will see a lot of action from him in the future," Tolley added. The netters will face Catawba here today.
