Elon College golfers claim
1976 Invitational crown
by Joe Chandler
The win in the Elon
Invitationsil Golf Tournament
upped the linksmen’s season
record to 60 wins and 18 losses.
The Elon College golfers
finished second in a four-way
match with High Point,
Catawba and Towson State on
March 18. High Point took first
with a 317 total, Elon finished
second with a 321 total,
Catawba had a 336 total and
Towson State tallied 338.
Elon took first place honors in
a three-way match against
Campbell and Atlantic
Christian which was played at
Campbell on March 22. The
Fighting Christians had a 391
total to defeat Campbell by one
shot. Atlantic Christian
finished with a 410 total.
The Fighting Christian
linksters returned home to
Indian Valley Country Club on
March 23 for a three-way match
against Catawba and Guilford
and emerged as the victor by a
whopping 23 shots. Elon had a
306 total, Catawba tallied a
329, and Guilford finished with
357 total.
The Elon linksmen hung on
to claim a five-shot victory in
the Elon Invitational Golf
Tournament held April 5 and 6
at Alamance Country Club. The
victory was an especially sweet
one for the Fighting Christians
who were unable to grab a title
in two hosted tournaments last
year.
The Christians put together a
strong first round and a very
strong front nine in the second
round, only to falter on the back
nine of the final round. Elon’s
three low scorers had 39, 42 and
42 on the last nine holes.
Bill Peterson, of
UN C-Wilmington, won
individual honors by firing
rounds of 74 and 69 for a total of
143. Finishing second, five
strokes behind, was Junior
Nance of Pembroke at 148. Rod
Morrow of Gardner-Webb was
third at 150 with three Elon
golfers tied for fourth place.

David Braxton, Chuck Scott

to tie with Butch O’Briant of
Atlantic Christian.
The Elon golfers took third
place in the Kitty Hawk
Invitational Tournament,
played on the Seascape course
on March 26, 27 and 28. Temple
University won top honors
posting a 1131 total. Elon
posted a total of 1141 to take
third. A total of nine teams
participated in the tournament.
According to head golf coach
Bill Momingstar, "We are right
on the verge of having a super
golf team. The last two or three
tournaments we have played
like we should on the front side
but we have not been getting it
together on the back side.”
Momingstar was quick to
add, however, '1 think we will
have it all together for the
NAIA National Championship
Tournament though."
