lost a sudden death playoff after
tying Rodney Morrow of
Gardner-Webb for medalist
honors with a two-day total of
147.
The Elon golfers defeated
Atlantic Christian 310 to 334 in
a match held April 12 at Indian
Valley Golf Club in Burlington.
David Graham led the
Christians with a 75 in that
event.
Elon took top honors again
the following day at Cyprus
Lake when Campbell,
Methodist, amd Greensboro all
bowed in defeat to the Fighting
Christians. Bill Burton and
David Braxton led the Elon
contingent with a 71 and 72
respectively. The team scores
were Elon 374, Campbell 384,
Methodist 399, and Greensboro
421.
Guilford College was the next
opponent to fall to the Fighting
Christian golfers. The Elon
linksmen posted a devastating
34-stroke victory over the
Quaker golfers in the match
held April 14 at Bel Aire
Country Club. Blair Moyer and
Bill Overton led the Christians
with a 72 and 73 respectively.
The Elon golfers ended their
season with a record of 18-2.
This tally upped their record for
the past three years to an
impressive 58-7.
Five Elon golfers have
received honors for their
performance this season. Chuck
Waters and Chuck Scott were
named to the all-District 26
team. David Breixton, David
Overton, and Bill Burton along
with Waters and Scott were
named to the all-Carolinas
Conference team.
by Gary Spitler
The Fighting Christian
baseball team ended their 1976
campaign on a losing note
falling 7-6 to Guilford and 12-4
to Liberty Baptist. Compiling a
15-14 season record, the
Christians battled with the bats
and pitching to compile a .299
batting average and 3.56 ERA.
Elon finished seventh in the
Carolinas Conference with a 3-7
mark. High Point, Guilford,
Pfeiffer, and Catawba advanced
to the 1976 CC tournament May
6-8. Guilford won this year’s
title, which was the first CC
title for the Quakers since the
new double-elimination
tournament went into effect.
Elon’s season was not all lost,
however, Doug Williams, a
senior, set two records this
season. The new stolen bases
record stands at 54 for a career
set by Williams this season. The
old record was set by Carroll
Reid during the 1950’s. The
other record broken this season
by Williams was career home
runs which he holds with 18 to
his credit. The old recent was
held by Bill Dunn who played
for the Christians during the
1972-74 years.
Outfielder Chuck Lindsay
tied for fourth in single season
stolen bases with 16. He tied
with Carroll Reid (1953) and
Mel Claiborne (1968).
Catcher Tommy Vaughn led
in home runs for the Christians
this season with six. He tied for
third in single season home
runs with Scott Quakenbush
(1950), Gil Watts (1959), and
Mike Little (1960).
Junior Charlie Gamble
blistered the bats this season,
collecting 37 of 87 for a .425
average. In addition. Gamble
finished first in batting
averages in the Carolina’s
Conference. Tommy Vaughn
finished second in the batting
department, slamming a .356.
Chuck Lindsay followed with a
.327 and Doug Williams with a
.326.
Pitching was strong on this
season’s ball club. Gary
Neugent (3-1) finished the
season with the lowest ERA of
1.67, pitching 37 innings,
giving up 7 earned runs,
walking 13, and fanning 28.
Junior Lou Williams (3-4)
followed with a 2.49 ERA,
pitching 43 Vi innings, giving up
12 earned runs, walking 28, and
striking out 53. Danny
Gonnella (2-1) finished next
with a 3.11 ERA, followed by
Ronnie Johnson (3-1) with a
3.12, Randy Robertson (3-3)
with a 4.26, and Mike Springton
(1-1) with a 8.49. The Elon
pitching crew gave up 209 total
hits, 164 nms, 88 earned runs,
walked 139, and fanned 190,
The ERA for the entire pitching
staff ended at 3.56.
Coach Bobby Jones and
Assistant Coach David Batts
strove to make the 76 season a
winning one for the Elon
batsmen. Even though the
Christians finished with a
15-14 slate, it does not represent
the tyjje of game which the
entire squad played.
So, that’s baseball for the
1976 regular season. For the
first time, Elon will have a
summer league in which the
Fighting Christians will be
competing against eight other
schools. The 1976 summer
league season opens June 6 at
Fairchild Park at 7:30 p.m.
against the Carolina Tarheels.

Elon taps High Point record
Fighting Christian Cindermen set
new CC record and place third
by Joe Chandler
The Elon Fighting Christian
cindermen placed third and
made their best showing in
more than ten years in the
Carolinas Conference track
meet held May 4 in Salisbury.
The Christians set a new
conference record in the
440-relays and finished third
behind Catawba and High
Point.
The relay event was covered
in a time of 42.6 seconds by
Elon’s top four sprinters David
Dodd, Harold Carver, Kenny
Washington, and Randall
Shelby. The new record of 42.6
seconds erased the old mark of
42.7 seconds set by High Point
in 1970.
The 440 relay record will also
go down as an Elon first. Roxie
Bratton set the only other track
record broken by the Elon
cindermen this spring when he
posted a time of ;09.7 seconds in
the 100-yard dash.
"Our depth in the sprinting
events really showed in the
relays,” said Coach Clayton
Johnson of his runners. "Kenny
had taken third in the 100-yard
dash (:09.91) and second in the
220 (:22.3), and Harold had
placed fifth in the 100 and
fourth in the 220, so they all had
a real workout before the
relays.”
Jim Riddle also placed first
for Elon in the javelin throw
with a toss of 117 feet, 3 inches.
Larry Scott placed second in the
high jump with a leap of 6 feet
after tying Guilford’s Tim Kent
and then losing because of total
misses.
Third place finishers were
Don McLaughlin in the broad
jump and Jeff MacKenzie in the
javelin throw. Danny Patterson
in the shot-put, Shelby in the
javelin throw, and Carver, all
took fourth-place honors.
Shag Johnson in the shot,
Thomas Moore in the high
jump. Carver in the 100-yard
dash, David Dodd in the 440
hurdles, and Preston Ruth in
the three mile run all placed
fifth in the conference meet.
Sports editor note
As sports editor, I would
like to thank the sports

Chandler, and Tom
Graupman for all their help
this year. Also to all the
coaches, I would like to say
thank you for meeting me
half way to make this year’s
sports section better than
ever. Thanks also goes to
Melvin Shreve who helped in
so many ways. Also, I would
like to thank Dr. M. E.
Priestley, Lance Latane, and
Paige Garriques, for without
them, it never would have
been possible. To everyone
again, I say, "Thanks.”
