The Pendulum
Off Campus Living - Some ways
of getting around the hassles
by Doug Durante
For the commuter of Elon,
going to college entails a lot
more than just going to classes
and studying. Living off campus
can be a great experience, but it
also involves a good deal of
work. Keeping up a house or an
apartment requires roommate
co-operation and a certain
degree of civility. Commuters
have rapidly increased over the
last few years and are at an all
time high this year.
Learning to budget your
money, which is'one of the most
important things we can learn,
is practical experience that will
help when you are finally on
your own. Bill paying, grocery
shopping and furnishing can be
less of a hassle if you go to the
right places.
Staying away from the
smaller, more expensive quick
shops is bound to help the
grocery bill, as will shopping for
many items at one time. By
carefully inspecting prices
instead of grabbing the first
brand, you c£in get more for your
money.
Utility bills are not the
headache one might think if a
few precautions are taken.
Turning thermostats down
during the day while at class
and away for a weekend helps
greatly. Also,, furnace filters
should be replaced regularly.
Simple things like leaving
lights on and the refrigerator
door open will cost you money.
Water and gas are just as easy
to control if a little judgment is
used.
Furnishing your castle can be
done well at a minimum of
expense. The Burlington area
usually offers one or two
auctions every week and yard
and garage sales are plentiful.
These types of purchases are
often far better deals than you
can find at stores and they offer
a variety of household items.
The best thing you will have to
work with in decorating your
home will be your imagination!
In my four years at Elon I have
seen some unbelievable ideas in
decorating, from beer can
bookshelves to fish net
partitians. You can develop the
atmosphere you choose with a
little time and thought. In the
future we will try and look at
some of the phases of off campus
living in more detail.
Frosh elections overcome poor turnout
This year’s elections for
freshman class officers revealed
a normal amount of campaign
activity on the part of the
candidates but election day
results of Oct. 7 showed only
145 freshmen voting.
Tim Mathews, a candidate for
the office of president
accumulated 43 votes to win
that position while Jeri Statler
won the office of vice-president
with 83 votes. Andrea Batten
went into the election
unopposed to win the office of
secretary-treasurer.
In the voting on an S.G.A.
student fees increase, the
referendum psissed, 264 votes to
185, with only 449 students
voting.
Elections for dormitory
presidents were tallied and are

he would urge their adoption in
EPA’s other labs at RTP and
would recommend to EPA in

an agency-wide basis.

Local 3347 of the American
