Lead vanishes in second half as Elon bows to PC, 21-17 By Jeff Plummer Staff Writer The story ran just about the same as a week ago as Elon lost for the second time in two weeks, 21-17. This time the loss was to Presbj^erian and knock ed the Fightin’ Christians out of a first-place tie with the Blue Hose. Elon travels to Salisbury to face Catawba (2-4) this Satur day in a must-win SAC-8 con ference game. Once again the early Christ ians’ lead dwindled, the penal ties continued to add up (9 for 89 yards) and another scoreless second half all contributed to the second straight loss. Elon jumped ahead on the first possession of the game as they drove 70 yards behind the passing of quarterback Sam Fromhart and runs from Jonas Davis and Darren Goode. Davis capped the drive, going in from the eight and following Brad Hornick’s PAT Elon had a 7-0 lead. The lead increased to 10-0 as Hornick booted a 37-yard field goal with 9:51 remaining in the half The drive started at the Presbyterian 49. Running back Chris Brown gained 12 yards on three carries before the drive was stopped at the 21. Presbyterian was to be heard from before the half Starting at their own 46, the Blue Hose were helped by an Elon pass interference penalty that moved the ball to the Elon 43. Quarterback Ted Stephens made it 10-7 when he con nected with Jimmy Lindsey in the end zone from 19 yards out. With 55 seconds remaining in the half the Christians started what was to be their last scor ing drive. Starting at their 30, Davis broke loose for 34 yards to the Presbyterian 36. Fromhart passed to Stanley Hairston and then to Chuck Ward down to the 13. Following an incomplete pass, wide re ceiver Jay Simmons made a di ving TD catch in the end zone, and another Hornick extra point gave Elon a 17-7 halflime lead. Presbyterian took the second half kickoff 74 yards to bring the score to 17-14. Two Elon penalties help keep the drive alive. Starting from their own two, Elon began moving downfleld behind running backs Goode and Davis. The maroon and .gold reached the Blue Hose 20 before being stopped by a Charles Huff interception. Another Elon turnover deep in their own territory set up what was to be the winning touchdown. Presbyterian reco vered a fumble at the 16, and three plays later Stephens found wide receiver Del Bark sdale wide open in the end zone for the go-ahead score, 21- 17. The Fightin’ Christians, as in the game against Guilford gave it one more shot late in the fourth quarter. Fromhart guided Elon to the Presbyte rian 40, but on the next play his pass was intercepted by Rod ney Harris and the Blue Hose came away with the win 21-17. Elon had 378 total yards to the Blue Hose 231, once again gaining more than their oppo nent, but their record slipped to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Davis, enjoying another su perb evening, led all rushers with 137 yards in 26 carries. DO YOU NEED Birth Control or Birth CmtroI in formation? V.D. Soreeninfj or Treatment? Pregnancy Testing?
