Who will win ACC tournament? Three of The Pendulum Sports staff writers preview the upcoming ACC Tournament in Charlotte, March 8-10. Lupo: The first round bye is what should enable Duke to capture that rare ACC gem: A conference and tournament title in the same season. But can the Blue Devils win a probable third matchup with Carolina? On the neutral floors of Charlotte, the chances of a clean sweep are greatly improved. But Dean Smith has more strategies up his sleeve than General Norman Schwarzkopf could ever dream of. Smith could concoct a scheme that could actually stymie the Devils' game plan. That is, of course, if a hungry Staff Picks Wake Forest team doesn't pull off any upsets in the meantime. Toomer: Blue Devil fans. I'm sorry. Prepare for the final Hurley vs King matchup and look for the Carolina senior to shine in his last ACC performance. I know that Duke has played almost flawlessly in the two previous games but how realistic is it to think that anyone will beat Dean three times in a season? I don’t think so. Look for Carolina's Diaper Dandies to make their presence known in the final game of the tournament against the Blue Devils. Now all of you Wake fans don't be mad, but seriously, this is no place for Cinderella stories. Rodney Rogers is just a year or two away. State, Georgia Tech, Virginia, and Wake will have longer to prepare for the NCAA tourney. Way: Overall, I think it’s a toss-up between Carolina and Duke in the finals, Carolina should win, but not by much. Wake Forest should take Virginia; Georgia Tech should win against N.C. State; they must win to be assured of a spot in the NCAA tournament. Carolina should have no problem with Clemson in the first round. Basketball team ends roller coaster season Ted Toomer The Pendulum The 1990-91 basketball season was a roller coaster season in every sense of the word. The Christians went from one extreme to the next as they ended their season with a 83-77 loss to Catawba in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament in Salisbury last week. Pat Ceasar, who lead the Christians in that game with 25 points, felt the loss was characteristic of their season. "The season was up and down. Through the loss of a few players the character of the team simply went down," Ceasar said. The Christians’ season took a terrible turn for the worst in February when a string of events led to the downfall of what was shaping up to be one of Elon's best seasons. The Christians were 15-7 and in first place in the conference when their streak of bad luck started. The loss of team leader Vernon Thompson for academic reasons, an ankle injury to Pat Caesar that would hamper him for the remainder of the season, the losses to sixth mim Len Silvia to a knee injury and dominant post man Elworth Smith, who missed the tournament due to illness, were the key factors that would eventually spell doom for the Christians’ season. However, despite the way the season ended for the Christians, Silvia is optimistic. "We finished at 16-11, which isn’t that bad. We were above .500 for the season. We should be strong next year; the only starter we lose is Wes (Jones) and I think we can go all the way to Kansas City next year," Silvia said. Meanwhile, Silvia plans to get his knee back into playing condition, and the Christians can look forward to next year.
