Hall of Fame picks
six new members

Six new members will be inducted into the Elon
Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies scheduled for
Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre. The
inductecs are Theresa Ireland Baxter, Bryan D. Burney,
Wayne E. Ellington, David M. Graham, Christopher D.
Worst, and William R. Miller.
The inductecs will be rccognized at Saturday's Football
game against Mars Hill at 2:00 at Burlington Memorial
Stadium.
Chris Worst, an '82 graduate, played for both Elon
National Championship teams.
In 1980, Worst was the Fightin' Christian's top
defensive player with 51 solo tackles, 68 assists, and 23
quarterback sacks. During his senior year, he had 65 solo
tackles, 47 assists, and 20 sacks.
Senior year, Worst made First Team in All-
Conference, All-District, and All-American. He also was
awarded the District Most Valuable Player Award.
"I have been reflecting on it all week. It is the
highlight of my career," Worst said. "I think that this
award is more than an individual award. It is a group award,
I would like to share it with my teammates."
Bill Miller coached basketball, baseball, and tennis at
Elon College from 1959 to 1979.
In his 20 years of service, Coach Miller acquired an
record of 329-224, with 12 winning seasons in fourteen
years. He filled in as head coach for baseball and tennis
whenever he was needed. Coach Miller died on July 9,
1991.
Baxter (class of 16) played volleyball, basketball, and
tennis during the 1970's at Elon. She lettered four times
in volleyball from 1972-75 and was named to the All-State
squad in 1974 and 1975. She was honored as the most
valuable player in 1974.
Bryan D. Burney, a member of the class of '81, was a
leader in football and track at Elon College.
In 1978, Burney was chosen All-Conference, All-
District, and All-State in football. He also set Elon's
single season interception record with a total of 12.
Burney also excelled in track, setting numerous records
for the school and conference. He was named the
Carolina's Conference Most Valuable Player twice, and
Elon's Most Valuable Player three times.
Wayne E. Ellington, a 1974 graduate, was one of
Elon's greatest basketball and baseball players.
As a member of the Fightin' Christian basketball
team, Ellington acquired a total of 677 points in only two
seasons while averaging 11.2 points and 4.6 assists per
game. He was selected to the Carolina's All-Conference
team in 1973.
In baseball, Ellington was chosen for All-Conference
and All-District in both 1973 and 1974.
Ellington won Elon’s Best Competitor Award in both
1973 and 1974 and was regarded as the school's best
athlete.
David Graham (Class of '80) lettered and excelled in
golf all four years at Elon.
He was awarded All-Confcrence and All-District in
1977, received All-American in 1978, and earned All-
Confcrence and All-District in 1979. In his senior year, he
won the conference and district individual championship
along with being Player-of-the-Year in the conference and
the distrix:t. During his senior year, Graham was named
Elon's Most Valuable Phiytf.'
