Gultural Connection Page Beastie Boys Beasties blast out hip hop rap in Raleigh Erick Gill The Pendulum Raleigh's Civic Center saw one of the most diverse crowds in "the concert hall's history last Tuesday when Lynch Mob, Rollins Band and the Beastie Boys came to town. All types of musical listeners were there. Hip hop rap lovers turned out to see Lynch Mob. Hard core .slam dancers niashed it up for the Rollins Band. A mixture of both came out to hear the Beastie Boys. Lynch Mob opened up with their hard core attitude to rap. The South Central gangster-style rappers kept the bass pounding while fans bounced up and down like pogo slicks. With former Mob member Ice Cube off doing solo projects, the rest of the hand seemed to be getting along fine "'ilhout him. Lynch Mob made various ■■emarks to Cube, but they were not kind Words. Lynch Mob's set was short and sweet. The Mob only played about 20 minutes, hut did an excellent job of working the Crowd into a sweat. Rollins Band followed up with their straight-edge, hard core, punk sound. The hard-hitting bass and screeching guitar ^cpt the mash pit circling and the bodies rolling. Henry Rollins, lead vocalist and former lead singer for the legendary punk hand Black Flag, stuck to the original Rollins Band songs. Rollins displayed the sights and Sounds he has been known for. He ^'luatted down in the middle of the stage ^Creaming out lyrics about death or "isanity, as the band blasted out music. As Rollins Band performed drawn out lasting as long as 15 minutes, fans Jumped up and rolled across the crowd "'hile others held them up. The headlining band, the Beastie ^®ys, opened with producer Ricky ^'Veil's jokes and an extended melody of ^arious songs including Shake your and Pass the Mic. The Beasties were as energetic on ^*age as they are in the studio. All three Jumped around the stage sporting their ^'lel shirts, Uimed around baseball caps Adidas Gazelles. Don't Miss!! While the Beasties pushed out the sounds, faithful fans bounced up and down wearing bell bottoms. It was a combination between the two previous bands. Some fans jumped in a hip hop style, while other fans circled in a mash pit fashion. The hip hop trio even picked up their own instruments and played original songs. The band did an old, hard core song, from back in the days when they used to be a punk band. Throughout the show the Beasties hardly ever played a complete song. The Beasties would mix songs together giving new life to some of iheir dead songs. By playing melodies, it added excitement as well as diversity. The band used their unique style to make everything flow smoothly. The focus of the show seemed to be on the Beasties Boy's newer, harder style rap. Most of their newer songs like Gratitude. The Maestro and Finger Lickin' Good carried that reckless style combined with a hard rock beat Older fans were treated to their fair share of old style songs as well. Rhymin' and Stealin' and Hold it now, Hit it and Egg Man were some of the older songs performed. D.J. Hurricane added more spice to these U'acks by mixing up various back beats and adding horns and whistles here and there. It was ironic that the Beastie Boys did not play more popular tracks off their mega-success album License to III. The Beasties forgot about classic party songs like Brass Monkey, Paul Revere and Fight for your Right. hor their fmal number, the Beasties tore through a funky version of Slow and Low. The Beasties retaliated by playing the Beasties side track Skills to Pay the Bills. Their latest single, So What'cha Want was the cap off to the high energy, hard rock, hip hop circus that the Beasties pul out. 'Malcolm X" premieres tonight at Terrace Theatre.
