Page 20 September 23, 1999 Elon takes a bite out of the Lions, Moore throws for two TDs in 35-15 win Travis Suber The Pendulum No longer hope or fantasy, the Elon Fightin’ Christian football team is staking their claim for a postseason appearance in 1999. On Saturday, they only drove the mes sage home further with a 35-15 slap ping of the North Alabama Lions. Elon quarterback Derrick Moore threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Fightin’ Christians only drummed up 186 yards on the ground. This after Elon piled up 507 rushing yards against an awestruck Delaware State just last week. How ever, it was the pass that put away the Lions, beginning with an explo sive 45 yard strike from Moore to tight end Rae Brown with 6:32 left in the first quarter. The defense was the story in the first half, with each team em barking on three drives a piece in the first quarter alone. Unfortunately for both teams, first downs were hard to come by with each team going three downs and punting on each possesion. The 45 yard touch down pass was the longest such pass in over 24 quarters of play stretching back to last season. As the second quarter began winding down, the North Alabama offense starting heating up. Tyrone Moore, a sophomore walk-on for the Lions scored on a one yard touch down run with just over 8:00 re maining in the second. It took only two minutes for the Lions to strike again as T.D. Jones scampered 40 yards into the Elon endzone to take the lead 12-7. In doing so, an opponent took the lead in a game against Elon for the first time all season. But in the tradition of “Seinfeld,” the Fightin’ Christian offense proclaimed, “No lead for you!!” Set up by a masterful 23 yard punt return by occasional “Point Nazi” and defensive back Mario Thompson, Elon’s Travis Whitaker caught a two yard pass for a touch down with only thirteen seconds remaining in the half. The first half came to a close with Elon regaining the lead 13-12. To say that the second half was a blowout is like saying that Luciano Pavrotti likes to eat. The Fightin’ Christians outscored the Lions 22-3 in the final two frames. The whipping began as Antwon Stevenson returned a fumble 48 yards for a touchdown extending the Elon lead 20-12. The fumble was caused by Kelly “The Sheriff of the Elon” Forrest who, in addition to the fumble, recorded 12 tackles and two sacks. Forrest was a preseason I-AA All-Independent selection and has shown why thus far this season. Forrest leads the team in tackles with 25, and also leads the team in tackles for losses. The only offense North Ala bama could muster after the deflat ing fumble return was a career-best 44 yard field goal by place kicker Mike Mitchell. Wanting to pad the lead even more, Elon’s Derrick Moore snuck a one yard push into the endzone with 4:33 remaining in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was just a formality as the Fightin’ Christians put seven more points on the board Mi rfig nngftr off of a Steven Fergi^«»Mne yard touchdown run to the endzone. Again the Elon defense declawed the Lions as the Fightin’ Christians held them scoreless in the final 19 minutes of the game. Elon’s next opponent is the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University Aggies (NC A&T), who will travel to Burlington Memorial Stadium for the first time ever to take on a Fightin’ Christian team which is 3-0 for the first time in six years. This ganie marks the begin- ning ot a four year series between the two teams in which the games will alternate locations each year. The Aggies have one both of their games this season by the exact same margin in both contests. The Aggie offense is very diversified with a mixed rushing attack as well as a good receiving core including Darius Helton who is the leading receiver with 8 catches this season. Elon will attempt to go 4-0 for the first time since 1986 when the Fightin’ Christians went 6-0 to start the season- iciit iiiv Emily MacDonnell/T/ie Pendulum Above right: Steven Ferguson outruns the Lions in the fourth quarter of the game to score a touchdown.
