Conference play

The Elon men’s soccer team
gained 14 new players this season
and Head Coach Mike Reilly has
set high standards. As the team
looks forward to facing new com
petition in the Southern
Conference, they are confidently
embarking into a challenging sea
son with hopes of success. With a
solid defense and attainable goals,
Reilly aspires to finish the season
top half of the conference.
After scrimmaging last
Thursday, the team has made rea
sonable progress since early in the
pre- season. However, Reilly
looks toward improving the teams
finishing ability and scoring
chances. According to Reilly, it’s
too early to be satisfied. With that
dedication to improvement.

Reilly said he anticipates a posi
tive season.
At 4 p.m. Friday the men will
have their match against East
Carolina University. Reilly said
the team is very
enthusiastic as they
prepare to compete
against a very similar
opponent, one which
is just as young. The
Phoenix are prepar
ing to compete
against East
Carolina’s aggressive
defense. Elon does
not want a repeat of
last season’s 5-2 loss
to the Pirates.
“We want to earn
respect in the confer
ence and make it to
the conference finals
because placing well
may earn a bid to the
NCAA tournament,”
said senior midfield
er Paul Bellacqua,
last season’s leading
goal scorer.
In a new confer
ence with an
improved outlook, the team seeks
to secure respect with a winning
season.
