The Pendulum NEWS Thursday, August 28, 2003 • Page 7 ALE targets students, stores over weekend Steve Earley News Editor Alcohol Law Enforcement issued citations to 56 people in Alamance County last weekend as part of separate programs tar geting sellers and buyers in underage transactions. Statewide ALE officers and Town of Elon Police charged 30 underage buyers Friday night for attempting to purchase alcohol, purchasing alcohol or using a fake ID, said ALE supervisor Rodney Johnson. The citations were part of the buyer-targeted Cops in Shops program, in which clerks are alerted to the presence of law enforcement officers in their store. Thirty-three citations were issued in a Cops in Shops opera tion staged during last year’s opening weekend. “We really focus on the college areas when the colleges start up to get the point across,” Johnson said. Friday night, ALE officers sent four 18-year-olds to 48 Alamance County stores to attempt to purchase alcohol. Twenty-six of the stores sold to the teenagers, said Johnson. Eight stores in Burlington and one in Elon were among those 26. Johnson said the clerks who sold to the teenagers were issued citations, and stores could face fines or have their ABC license suspended. Contact Steve Earley at pendu- lum@elon.edu or 278-7247.
