Among competitors, Atlantic Monthly climbs aboard college rankings wagon The Atlantic Monthly magazine took to the college ranking business Tuesday, intro ducing its 40-page, first annual “college admission survey”on newsstands nationwide. Atlantic’s report, which ranks the 50 most selective colleges in the nation, will compete with perennial rankings favorites, including U.S. News & World Report. John Fox Sullivan, president of The Atlantic Monthly, said he hopes the list will draw more teenage readers as well as their parents. The New York Times reports. The magazine has reportedly been losing millions of dollars annually. Atlantic findings, which Sullivan says were acquired using highly simplistic methodology, rank schools at different places than previous reports. The University of Chicago, for instance, is ranked by Atlantic at No. 39, while U.S. News & World Report lists it at No. 13 on its latest survey. Atlantic’s writers said they wanted to emphasize that “ a school’s selectivity does not necessarily reflect the quality of education it offers.” Sullivan told The New York Times that Atlantic’s list is not an attempt to compete “head to head” with U.S. News.” - Compiled by Lindsay Porter - CAREER CONNECTION: Your link to the Elon Career Center The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars Internships: Applications are now being processed for spring and sum mer internships in the DC area.
