Don’t be afraid to celebrate your culture with pr Maria Barreto Managing Editor (Smaria.abarreto For the longest time, I strug gled with my Hispanic identity. I was constantly worried about being too American to call my self Hispanic, but still too His panic to call myself an Amer ican. I had become trapped in the idea that there was one ideal of what someone who was Hispanic or American is “sup posed” to look like, without re alizing I could be both. IVe grown up with people telling me I don’t seem Hispan ic because I don’t have an accent or told to play different music because Marc Anthony and Prince Royce were too “Latin.” I grew up hiding that I admired authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Isabel Allende over Ernest Hemingway or F. Scott Fitzgerald. I went through a majority of my life suppressing the Venezuelan parts of myself. It wasn’t until coming to Elon University that I learned to ap preciate what made me unique and embraced my own culture of being Venezuelan-American. The United States used to be a place where different cul tures were welcomed instead of “othered.” With the current administration, immigrants are brought up with a usually negative connotation. Hispanic immigrants especially tend to be lumped together as crimi nals, drug lords or called illegal, despite the fact this nation was founded by immigrants. People u WE REFUSE TO BE PUSHED ASIDE OR FORGOTEN. eitlier forget or choose to ig nore that there are more than 30 countries represented in the Latino/Hispanic community in the United States brimming with rich and beautiful culture. But if there’s one thing Hispan- ics are, it’s stubborn. And we refuse to be pushed aside or forgotten. With this edition of The Pen dulum, we hope to give a voice to a community t|,„ always get the spofc serves.
