Champions Armstrong Tech Wins 4 Spiked by superb ballhandling: of Dowe, Worsley, and Perkins, each of whom was placed on the All-Tournament Five, the Broncos stole the 1948 Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown by tripping Storer 58-46, Norfolk 59-47 and Morristown 76-53. Left to right, front row: Rufus Dowe, Randolph Worsley, George Coburn, Gaither Perkins, Howard McAllister and Robert Simmons. Back row: Alex Vicks, George Brown, Grover Handley, Jesse Brown, Denny Lawrence, Pete Dowe, Coaches H. L. Scott and W. A. Gaines. Hey, everybody. How are things going these hot days? Well, let’s dig down through these old pa pers and see what we have on the final menu for you sports lovers. The Broncos closed the hardwood season by routing the highly-rat ed A. and T. team 34-45, and by nosing out the “505” basketeers of Fort Bragg 63-61. I guess by now all of you have been told that the Broncos are the 1948 Eastern Intercollegiate Ath letic Association (E. I. A. C.) Basketball Champions. I might add that that Randolph Worsley, Gaither Perkins and Rufus Dowe were placed on the “All Tourna ment Team”. Worsley scored a total of seventy (70) points in the three Bronco games which saw Fayetteville knock off Storer 58-46, Norfolk Unit 59-47, and Mnrristnwn 76-5.'^. The BroncOS m Sweeping aside all opposition, a plucky team from Armstrong Tech in Washington, D. C., led by Greeky Watson, pushed on to win the annual Invitational High School Basketball Tournament. Watson was voted the most Valuable Player Award for the tournament. Coach Charles Baltimore appears at the extreme right, front row. ask, what do you think of Arm strong Tech? Armstrong won the Eleventh Annual Invitational High School Tournament by de feating Roxboro 53-49, East Ar cadia 86-48, E. E. Smith &0-32, and Laurinburg 60-44. Armstrong scored 249 points in the four games. the three games played in Rock- hill. South Carolina. Here are figures in which I thing all of us might be interested. The Broncos scored 1,168 points during the regular hard wood season to give them an av erage of 58 points per game (not including the 193 points racked up in E. I. A. C. Tournament)'. Perkins was high scorer for the year with 249 points followed by “Wee” Willie Carter with 223 and “Little Dog” Harrison with 206. We say farewell to Herbert Tatum and William T. Johnson who are graduating and will not be around next year to don togs for Dear Old F. T. C. The All-Conference “dream team” was composed of Bacotes of E. E. Smith, 35 points for three games; Watson of Armstrong, 94 points for four games; Paige of Roxboro, 30 points for four games; and Liggens of Armstrong, 29 points for four games. Pete Simmons, White, Spruill, Battle, Coachman, Murray, Co burn, Reid and Robert Simmons are coming “right long” on the baseball diamond. The line-up will come from the following list; Catchers, P. Simmons and Reid, Pitchers, Harrison, Fleming and Catchers, P. Simmons and Reid; cond basemen, Battle and Coach man; short-stop, Spruill; and third baseman. Bob Simmons. The outfielders will probably be Coburn, Murray, Gordon, Burch and Cushenberry. What do you think of that fel- low. Greeky Watson (No. 24) of I guess this winds up things for now. Hope to see you around next Off-Campus Group April 10„ 1948 was a day filled with fun for the off-campus stu dents at State. At 9:30 in the morning, a long. Queen City bus rolled upon the campus to take the group and their guests to Mack’s Tavern, some 10 miles away. All had baskets for them selves and for their guests. At the outing the activities were golf, soft ball, card playing, dancing, running races and other activities. Softball teams were chosen by Joseph McDonald and by O. B. Ford. McDonald’s team defeated Ford’s team 15-8. Coach H. L. Scott was the umpire, and when he became hungry, he called the game because of “dinner”. Lunch amid the tavern flowers was quite enjoyable. The bus returned at 3:15 and we arrived on the campus at 4:10 p. m. Certainly, we are indebted to our chaperones, Mrs. Milberrie, Mrs. Norris, Miss Valentine, and Coach, H. L. Scott for taking the trip with us, and to Mr. Thomas Barnes and his family who made our picnic an enjoyable one. The dance began at 8:00 o’clock in the evening with Mr. Tildon McKoy always leading the way. The day’s activities were under the direction of Mrs. Milberrie and Miss Melchor. collected a total of 193 points in Armstrong Tech? Maybe, I should September. —Dorothy M. Burton
