The Broncos got off to a flying start on October 2 to cop an 8-0 victory from the St. Paul eleven. The first and only touchdown of the day came as result of “co captain” Harrison’s tossing a 35- yard pass to “Red” Worsley who made a beautiful running catch rnd went over standing up. Spurill’s conversion missed by inches. The following week-end, Octo ber 9, the Broncos took a 31-0 lick ing at the hands of the “Rams” of Winston-Salem. Hats off to the Broncos for the never-say-die spirit they displayed on October 16 when the chips were down in the St. Augustine game. With State trailing 13-0 in the second quar ter, “Little Dog” Harrison passed to left end Worsley for the first Bronco score. Shortly thereafter, Spurill shot one of his bullet-like passes to “lanky” Kenneth White for another six pointer. The con versions by Mortop were wide and the half ended with the Broncos trailing 13-12. The St. Augustine eleven managed to push over an other touchdown in the final quarter and the game ended 19-12 with the Broncos knocking on the door of the “promised land.” The Broncos came back one week later, October 23, against Morristown College from Morris town, Tennessee determined to avenge the two previous losses and trounced the Tennessee eleven 21-0. There was just too much “Little Aggie” Spurill. “Skeeter Co-Captains A M m Right Tackle Harold Cushinbery, and halfback William Harrison are two reasons for State’s success in football this year. Hawk” McAllister recovered a fumble on the opponent’s 30 yard line. After successive gains by Eargle, Morton, and Harrison, Spruill went off tackle for 8 yards and a touchdown. Spurill’s The Gaines-Scott Broncos, 1948 m sWs mm m The football squad under the direction of Head Coach William “Gus” Gaines and assistant Coach Harold Scott include the following: Front row left to right — Coach Gaines, Pelham, Wiley, Wesby, McDonald, Gaines, McAllister, Harris, Spruell, Burch, Morton, Pint Murray, and Coach Harold Scott: Second row left to right — Vick-trainer, Bull-Dog-Black, “Reco” Lawrence, Harrison, (Co captain), Eargle, (Glue-fingers)-Worsley, Ace Parker, Wallace, Fain, Manriing, Hawkins, Yarborough, McLaughlin and Reed-trainer: Third row, left to right— Big-Charlie Mumford, Nelson, Coburn, Tinker- Lord, White, Melvin, Henderson, Campbell, Good-Kid Smalls, McCurry, Rutherford, Armstrong, stone-wall Cushinbery, (Co-Captain) and Carter. attempted conversion was short of the mark. The second touchdown came as result of another Morris town fumble recovered by co captain Cushinberry on the Mor ristown 45. After two thrusts at the opponent’s forward wall which did not give, the Broncos took to the air. Harrison tossed a pass and Spurill who, making a spectacular overhead catch, streaked across the goal-line for another 6 points. Spurill’s con version was good. The Broncos kicked to the opponents who re turned the pigskin to the 20. After several attempts to penetrate the Bronco line had failed, Edwards faded back to toss a pass only to be smothered in the end zone by a host of blue-clad Broncos (Black, Cushinberry, Lord, McAlister, Melvin, and Mumford). The offic ials ruled it a safety and the Broncos Ipd 15-0. Fullback Thad McCurry drove through the Mor ristown forward wall for the fin al touchdown of the game. Jimmy Burch gave the crowd what it had been looking for when throughout the game he booted the pigskin for an average of 65 yards. It was the first conference game for the Broncos this season. The remaining conference tilts are with Norfolk Unit, Livingstone College, and Elizabeth City Teachers Col lege. (Continued on page 8)
