FSU Students Intern at Pinecrest SOUTHERN PINES-Teach- er-interns from the Unversity of North Carolina at Greensboro and Fayetteville State University are playing a vital role in Pinecrest High School’s new federal project Mrs. A.C. Trivette, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act—Title III director has announced. The official title of the project. Differentiated Staffing to Personalize Instruction, of “Distaff’ as one reporter has referred to it, implies that by reorganizing the educational staff, the individual student can get the personal kind of help and attention he needs to be successful at school. The plan involved the use of veteran teachers, teacher-interns, clerical and instructional aides. At Pinecrest the project is being physically implemented in the guidance, math and business departments. The teacher-interns, five young ladies and one gentleman, are a part of the educational team while gaining valuable experience themselves as part of their own formal training. FSU students are under the direction of Dr. Walter C. Pace. Even though the principle means of evaluating the success of the program depends on the results of student control groups, Mrs. Trivette feels that some of the side benefits, like the better preparation of teachers through this kind of intern approach, should also be examined. These interns, she thinks, are having more and varied experiences as teachers of children, creators of learning situations, and managers of resources, as they work with veteran teachers, and the aides. Cites Mrs. Trivette, “In the old teacher training approach, the prospective teacher was assigned one supervisory teacher and usually could gain professional insights through this one teacher only. In this differentiated or reorganized pattern, the intern is teamed with many veteran teachers from whom she can learn.” She noted also that the UNC-G students were to be part of the project for a semester while the Fayetteville State students were to remain at Pinecrest for a year. Traditionally the internship for teachers has been much shorter and probably less effective Mrs. Trivette adds. “The federal funding enables us to pay these interns which is another break with tradition,” the project director said, and continued, “It’s the first time that the two universities involved have had their interns on salary and away on internship for this extended length of time.” The Interns who are now in the program at Pinecrest are: Miss Treva Streeter, Fayetteville State University, from Kinston working on her B.S. Degree in mathematics; Miss Mary Amend, University of North Carolina at G reensboro, from Greensboro earning a B.A. Degree in history; Mr. Hubert Draughon, Fayetteville State University, from Autryville seeking a B.S. in mathematics; Miss Carol Dalton, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, from Greensboro, for a B.A. in history; and Miss Ann Gretton, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, from Jacksonville, Florida, for a B.A. in English.
