PAGE EIGHT THE VOICE nECEMBER 1971 BRONCOS OFF AND RUNNING WIN FffiST THREE OF NEW SEASON Off and running in their fastest start in years, the Fayetteville State Broncos bucked their way past Federal City Ck>llege in the season’s opener at the Auditorium 86-80, and for an encore slid by South Carolina State in a 91-88 overtime tilt in Orangeburg. Then for good measure the ponies took the measure of Livingstone College in Salisbury to the tune of 103-93. Coach Tom Reeves’ Broncos took the lead early in the Federal City contest and kept it the rest of the way. Senior stalwarts Mike Sneed and Earl McNeil led the way with 26 markers each. The Broncos fast break was smoking, and McNeil was on the play-off end of a number first hjjf buckets. When he colled Sneed came on strong. Rubin Ruffin, a nimble 6-1 freshman from Weldon, came off the bench to give a strong performance on the boards while tallying 14 points of his own. In fact, the play of the reserves is one factor in the season thus far. Bob Tyus, “Arkansas” to his teammantes, played a strong floor game. The Broncos were favored over the Livingstone Blue Bears. But their conquest of the strong South Carolina State Bulldogs was a pleasant surprise. John Safford, who forms the other hall fo back court with McNeil, has had his playing time cut for defensive weaknesses, with the bulk of the time going to Arkansas. As the peper goes to press, the Broncos face weekending games with Winston Salem and Elizabeth City. Bronco fans are looking forward to this season with glee.
