Ross, who was appointed recently as director of guidance and testing, will also serve as an assistant football coach at FSU it was announced. Ross, a native of Georgia, assumed his duties July 1. He comes to Fayetteville State University from Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, Ga, He Is also a native of Fort Valley. While at Fort Valley, the 36-year-old graduate of Fort Valley State received both the B. S. degree and the Master’s degree in guidance counsel ing. Ross, who’s a five-year Army veteran, and his wife, Marvls, have two girls. SPORTS BRIEFS Pi JlTiaPATES IN TOURNEY The Bronco basketball team will participate in the Char lotte Tip - Off Tournament, Dec. 29-30, in Charlotte. The Reeves - coached Broncos finished second in the 1972 CIAA tourney and second in the 1972 District 29 NAIA tourney. The Broncos have vowed that they will not be "bridesmaids” always. BEST TEAM Fayetteville State was the best hitting team in the Na tional Association oflntercol- legiate Athletics (NAIA), ac cording to statistics released by the NAIA Service Bu reau. Coach Milton Armstead’s charges clubbed thehorsehide at a .389 clip in 21-games during the past baseball sea son. The Bronco team had three batters with over .400 hitting averages and they in cluded Ronnie Battle, Larry Faulk, and Roger Floyd. Fayetteville State also had the best earned run average with a 1.43 mark in 21 games. Earl McNeil was the leading pitcher with eight victories and a no-hltter to his credit. CIAA Names Seven PAGE EIGHT The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) named seven persons to its 1972 CIAA Championship Committee, according to a list released by league President William Bell. In making the announce ment, Dr, Bell, said that the committee would have the ov erall responsibility of setting a date for the game, select ing a site, promotion and co ordination, and facilities for the game. Named to the committee were; L. D. Smith, acting com missioner, chairman; Robert Vaughn, Elizabeth City State University; A. D. Roscoe, Jr., Fayetteville State University; Dr. Walter Lovett, Virginia State College; Dr. Marlon Thorpe, chancellor, Eliza beth City State University; Eddie McGlrt, Johnson C. CIAA Names Committee Five of the Central Inter collegiate Athletic Associa tion’s outstanding personali ties have been named to the 1973 CIAA Basketball Tour nament Committee, CIAA President William Bell an nounced recently. According to Dr. Bell, the list Includes for the first time, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, a member insti tution’s chief administrator. Chancellor Charles “A” Lyons, Jr., Fayetteville State University. Acting Commissioner L. D. Smith is the chairman of the panel and it includes Dr. Jack Bratboy, Johnson C. Smith University; C. E. Gaines, Win ston - Salem State University; J, E. Lytle, Shaw University and Joseph Thompson, Saint Paul’s College. Ex-officio members include members Dr. William Bell, S. M. Perkins, secretary - treasurer, CIAA; and Perry R. Leazer, director CIAA service bureau. The 1973 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be held Feb ruary 22-24 at the Greensboro Coliseum and four big ses sions are planned for the many fans who will be attending. It showed that the median num ber of school years complet ed for all persons age 25 and over was 12.1 years in 1970, compared with 10.6 years in 1960 and 9.3 years In 1950.
