PAGE 3 THE VOICE JANUARY 3 i > I 973 BRONCOS 13-7 IN CIAA Reeves Seeks Cl AA Tourney iM He is known around cage cir cles for his fancy white boots and flashing smile. He is the skipper of the Fayetteville State University basketball forces. His name is coach Thomas L. Reeves and he is off to a great start in the CIAA basketball race this season. The likeable head basketball coach is beginning his third year at Bronco-land, and is steadily moving toward another CIAA Tourney berth. Present ly, his talent-laden squad has a 7-3 CIAA mark and holds an 11-5 overall worksheet. The only conference losses have been to Johnson C. Smith University, Norfolk State College and Win ston-Salem State University. However, the contests with these CIAA-foes were not de cided until the last stages of the game, and the Reeves-men will have rematches with these teams before the season con cludes. Th’s year the Reeves-men are blessed with a very well bal anced squad although there are some outstanding individual Cogdell Brothers-Devastating Duo Fayetteville - Swish! Swish! Swish! Is it Alton Cogdell? Is it Larry Cogdell? These two players are presently bringing a lot of “Oohs” and “Aahs” from Bronco followers around the CIAA with their spectacular plays and play-making. Coach Thomas Reeves, skip per of the talent-laden Fayet teville State University Bronco basketball squad has abrother- combination this year which is proving to be a devastating force on the hardwood. Everone in the CIAA Is quite familiar with number twenty- one of the Reeves-men. He is All-CIAA candidate Alton God- dell, a sure-handed shooter - rebounder, and cat-like ball- handler, who ’s averaging 22.5 points a game and 9.6 rebound per contest. However, another Cogdell, Larry to be exact, has emerged on the Bronco cage scene which is giving coach Reeves double dynamite mat erial on the hardwood. Alton, the younger brother, plays forward while his big brother Larry holds down the pivot-spot. Larry, a 6-6 220 pounder who wears number fifty one for the Bronco-men, started playing in the second semester at FSU and has been nothing short of sensational. Both of the bro thers are products of nearby Saint Pauls, North Carolina, and played their high school ball at Eastside High School. In nine games for the Reeves- men, Larry Cogdell has poured in a total of 82 points and grab bed 72 big rebounds. At this point, older brother Larry is a- veraging eight rebounds a game and has a 9.1 scoring average. Little brother Alton is not doing too bad either. In a super players. Alton Cogdell, Ter rance Murchison. James Tyus, Roy Birch, Sam Smith, Larry Cogdell, Robert Wilson and Rubin Ruffin are just a few of the many fine players on the Bronco team this year. Alton Cogdell is one of the league - leading scorers and field goal percentage shooters, while Terrance Murchison is a rebounding and shooting star. Reeves, the genial leader of the Broncos, has vowed to take his team all the way this season. “I believe that we are going to surprise a lot of people this season.” the smiling cage boss said earlier in the cam paign. Coach Reeves was voted CIAA Tourney Coach of the Year at Greensboro last year as his Broncos bowed to Norfolk State College for the CIAA Tourney crown. “This year I want to take the whole thing,” said Reeves. And at the midway point of the CIAA race, the FSU Broncos appear to have the mo mentum to do just that. individual effort against Eliza beth City State University, Al ton tossed in a season-high of 40 points while pulling down 19 re bounds. In 19 games for the Broncos this campaign, Alton has .722 field goal percentage mark. The classy 6-4, 190 pound forward has pulled down 183 rebounds, bucketed 429 points for a 22.5 game average. Alton has also been selected as the “Player-of-the-Week” in District 29 of the NAIA during December. Presently coach Thomas Reeves is seeking his second straight berth in the CIAA with 13-6 overall mark. His CIAA record is 8-3. Last year, the Broncos were runners-up at the CIAA Tour ney and coach Reeves was sel ected “CIAA Tourney Coach- of-the-Year.” COGDELL BROTHERS t K mKONCO BLOCKS A KaM — t ayeiiwviiie Siate biiiver- sity center I.arry Cogdell blocks a shot by a Winston-Salem piayer recently in a contest at Fayetteville. The Broncos, coached by Thomas 1^. Reeves, have not lost a single contest since starting the second half of the hardwood campaign. This could mean trouble for opponents as the Bronco hard wood - men prepare for the home stretch of the torris CIAA race for the 1972-73 cage season. In fact, the Fayetteville University presently stands 7-2 in the CIAA right behind the Winston-Salem State University Rams in the Southern Division of the league. Overall, the Reeves-men are currently sporting an 11-5 work, sheet overall. Since the New Year began, the Fayetteville State University squad have moved down four straight CIAA opponents in im pressive fashion. The Reeves-men have defeated Virginia State College, Livingstone College, Saint Paul’s College and Shaw University. The Bronco basketeers have conquered Liv ingstone College and Shaw University both at home and away. In their latest 97-80 victory over the Shaw University Bears, All-CIAA contender Alton Cogdell poured in 24 points and con tinues to average over 20 points per contest for FS’U. The 6-4, 195 pound St. Paul’s North Carolina native “can-do-it- all” according to the skipper of Broncos, Thomas Reeves. “Cogdell is very effective and tough in a one-on-one sit uation,” said the FSU skipper, “and he moves the ball ex tremely well plus he is an excellent rebounder and .shooter,” Reeves said. Having defeated the Shaw University Bears earlier this sea son by two points at Raleigh, “I thought it would be a lot closer,” smiled the genial boss of the Broncos. “All of the kids are hungry to play good ball and I believe we will play this way throughout this season,” said the likeable Reeves. Although the Broncos have a winning team, the squad has many versatile players. Junior guard James Tyus who hit 18 points against Shaw is very deadly outside shooter and rebounder. Forward Roy Birch and Terrance Murchison each added 12 points. Roy Birch is very quick and has been deadly on de fense. “If you are not careful, Birch will steal the ball and have it in the basket before the opponent knows what is happen ing,” smiled Reeves. Terrance Murchison, A 6-6 forward - pivot man, lias proved to l;e a very clutch rebounder and sliooter and is averaging over 12 rebounds per game. Last year Coach Re»>ves was ruiiner-up in th‘ CIAA Tourney and voted “Outstanding Tourney CIAA Coach,” This year the FSU ski|)Fier says that he “wants to lake the whole thing.”
