GENERAL ASSEMBLY CITES FSU CAGERS THE 1972-73 BASKETBALL TEAM Fayetteville State University, the second oldest public sup ported institution of higher learning in North Carolina, under the tutelage of Coach Thomas L. Reeve, has won its first Cen tral Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tourna ment championship by topping Elizabeth City State Univer sity, Winston- Salem State University, and in the finals defeat ing defending CIAA Champion, Norfolk State College 94-89 in overtime to win the coveted title; and James Tyus, Terrence Murchison and Alton Cogdell were named to the 1973 All-CIAA Tournament team. Fayetteville State University then represented the CIAA in the NCAA College Division Regionals, defeating Echerd Col lege, Saint Petersburg, Florida, 95-66 before an enthusiastic audience in the Cumberland County Memorial Arena on Tues day, March 6, and thereby earning the right to travel to South Atlantic Regionals, Salem, Virginia, March 8-9, 1973, where the Broncos lost a heartbreaker to Old Dominion College 80-74 but overpowered Baltimore Loyola 81-66 to win consolation honors. The FSU Broncos finished the 1972-73 campaign with an over all record of 21 wins and 11 losses, lost only one man, Ter rence Murchison, from this fine team, and will continue to be a team to be reckoned with in the years ahead. Therefore, be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring; Sec. 1. That the General Assembly extends its congratu lations to the coach and players of Fayetteville State Univer sity’s basketball team for its fine 1972-73 season, and wishes the University continued success with its athletic program. Sec. 2. That a copy of this resolution shall be spread upon the minutes of both houses of the General Assembly, and copies of this resolution shall be sent to the coach and members of the basketball team by the Secretary of State. Sec. 3. This resolution shall become effective upon its rati fication. REDSKINS MIKE BASS SPEAKS Af FSU ATHLETIC BANQUET Fayetteville State University honored the Broncos Thursday night, April 26 in its annual Athletic Banquet held in H. L. Cook Dining Hall. James Tyus was named Most Valuable Player for leading the Fayetteville State Broncos to the CIAA championship and the NCAA College Division play offs in basketball. The speaker for the occassion was Mike Bass, defensive backfield star of the National Football League Champions, Wash ington Redskins and runner-up to Super Bowl Champions, Miami Dolphines. Tyus was only one of the many FSU athletes honored at the Broncos’ annual Athletic Banquet. Other basketball awards went to Alton Cogdell as the club’s leading scorer. Terrence Mur chison, the team’s only senior, as the best defensive perfor mer, Larry Cogdell as most determined and freshman Mike Ross for the highest academic average. Coach Raymond McDougal passed out special awards to 12 members of the FSU football team which posted a 6-3 record. Quarterback Craig Sills earned the Most Valuable Player award and wide receiver Clarence Pointe as the best all- around athlete. MVP awards also went to Gail Cameron in girls basket ball, Vincent Reid in golf, Ronnie Battle in baseball, James Godwin in Track and Henry Berry in tennis.
