PAGE 2 THE VOICE OCTOBER, 1973 m W m f'&s gi in % EDITOR-IN-CHIEF-OF THE VOICE - Virginia Graham, a native of Pinlc Hill, N. C., takes a break from her daily duties to enjoy some autumn sunshine. She is a senior, majoring in History and Political Science. ■5!:K;*V.V.«S BY ANGELIKA TIBENSKY When asked how she started working with little children, Mrs. Lyons said that a superintendent got her start^ years ago. He did not have an opening for secondary education, the field in which I had my degree. “You look like you ought to make a nice primary teacher, he said.” Mrs. Lyons claims that, contrary to common belief, a person'must be very careful about the molding of little children. Children, she says, are experiencing the learning process in every situation, whereas older children have already learned certain things. Mrs. Lyons teaching experiences include teaching at the high school level and the collegc level. In college she majored in Home Economics and .Science and received a certificate in Dietetics. After going into the primary education field, Mrs. i,yons taught first grade, then second, and back to first auain. However, in the past few years she has discovered new horizons in developing aptitudes of the pre-school child. The original proposal for the kindergarten at Fayet teville State University was written by Mr. Turner. However, it was Mrs. Lyons who followed through with the plan and put the appropriated funds to good use. The nursery was located in the women’s gym prior to its present location behind the women’s gym. The present program consists of two teachers, Mrs. Evelyn Reeves and Mrs. Lyons. Mrs. Reeves is in charge of the four-year-olds, and Mrs. Lyons teaches the five-year-olds. Each of the two teachers is aided by a teacher’s assistant and fourteen student workers. At present thirty- seven students are enrolled, nineteen under Mrs. Reeves’ care and eighteen under Mrs. Lyons’ watchful eye. Of thirty- seven students, ten are faculty member’s children. A progress report goes out to the parents four times a year and a PTA meeting is in session once a month. The teachers encourage parents to come to conferences. Most of the children at tend two years. “They are better qualified to be in my class if they have come through Mrs. Reeves’ room than from any other school,” said Mrs. Lyons. The normal day schedule begin at 8 a.m. with ex ploration. The children learn through games and puzzles. They have breakfast at 9 a.m. and continue with circle times at 10 a.m. They sing songs, say the pledge, listen to poems and engage in finger plays which is followed by an art period. “They write their names and numbers, but never long enough to get tired. The children listen to music and stories. Then they have lunch. After lunch they go outside and then have nap time from one to two hours. Three o’clock ends the day,” says the Chancellor’s wife. (Coriliiiued on p«fcC’ 7) Which Way are You Going? Last week (Oct. 15-19) was mid-term week, which is a true indication that the semester is half-way gone and in a few days our mid-term grades will be released from the Registrar’s Of fice. For each student his grades should be a clear indication of which direction he is going. So if your grades indicate that you are just barely squeezing by, take action immediately! Start using your time more wisely and take advantage of the facilities provided by FSU! Now I know what the next gripe is! “FSU doesn’t provide any facilities.” Well, if you are saying this then evidently you haven’t been exposed to the resources FSU does provide. Even though FSU has a limited scope for which it can supply your needs, it definitely has made nearly adequate provisions for the Bronco family. For instance, the Chestnutt Library is in operation from 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday thru Thursday ; special hours for the weekend. The Tutorial Program, The Communications Center, The Audio-Visual Lab, and The Reading rooms in the Rudolph Jones Student Center are also sources that a person can use to improve himself academically. So if your grades indicate that you are in academic trouble, take heed immediately. Don’t hedge around the issue and put it off. Your future depends upon the results of these actions. m BUSY FIRST LADY AT FSU - Mrs. Rosa Lyons, wife of Fayetteville State University Chancellor Dr. Charles “A” Lyons, Jr., is surrounded by some of her students at FSU’s Pre-School Laboratory. In addition to her many and varied functions as FSU’s First Lady, Mrs. Lyons has taught pre schoolers for the past three years and enjoys every minute of it. One wonders how Mrs. Lyons does it with a busy husband, two teenage daughters, and a small son - but she does a wonderful job of it all! (FSU Photo by Gilbert Foust) Mrs. Lyons: Day-Care Specialist HOMEWORK CONFERENCE ~ These two FSU students appear to be in serious thought even though mid-semester exams are over on the Bronco campus. The two students are sophomore Monte Baker, Laurinburg, N.C., and Angelika Tibensky, a senior from Fayetteville.
