PAGES THE VOICE OCTOBER, 1973 € • BRONCOS WIN HOMECOMING Broncos Win Homecoming Over Winston-Salem State, 14-12 P * U i I i I I The Fayetteville State University Broncos won the Homecoming Game over the RAms of Winston-Salem State, 14-12. However, they fell to the hands of the Livingstone College Blue Bears at Salisbury, 34-20. The loss for the Ray McDougal-coached squad dropped their record to 2-3 in the CIAA and 3-4 overall. The Broncos face tough Elizabeth City State University at their Homecoming on October 27. The leading scorer for the Broncos is James Godwin with eight touchdowns to his credit. Godwin and running mate Glen McKoy are the one-two punch for the Bronco-men compiling over 600 yards between them so far this year. The Broncos have been playing lack-lustre football. However, the McDougal-men have an outside chance of winning the crown in the CIAA. They will have to do it by winning their last three games, beginning with Elizabeth City. After that, the Broncos play the last two games at home against Virginia Union University and Johnson C. Smith University. Bronc*o Capers Begin Praeliee {Sessions by; Ronnie Allen With the Bronco’s 73-74 cage season almost upon us, head Coach Otis Hawkins has begun to prepare this team for the new season. In talking with Coach Hawkins, I asked him what would he be looking for out of the team. “Well,” he began, “I will be evaluating the team to see how well they play with each other. And I will be looking for attitudes toward the game and good disposition.” Hawkins’ feelings toward the upcoming season are confident as he stated that the team still needs a few things to work out. The probable starting five for the Broncos have not been picked yet, but we can rest assured that the sparkplugs will be James Tyus and ALL-CIAA Alton Cogdell. ALL-CIAA coaches have different methods of coaching. I asked Coach Hawkins to explain his viewpoint on coaching. “Basketball is a very versatile game and it should not cause that much of a handicap. Some coaches change teams every so often, but just because of different coaching methods, this does not mean that the game itself changes.” Before the season begins, Hawkins said that he places in an envelope his prediction of the season and pulls it out at the end of the season to see if he’s right. Inspired by William Bryant, who is an alumnus of FSU. and Dr. William Bell, athletic driector here at FSU, Coach Hawkins patterns his philosophy of coaching by having his team in a progressive atmosphere. 1973 -1974 Basketball DATE OPPONENT Nov. 30 A&T State Univ. In talking with Coach Walker, he made this comment about the season coming up: “I am optimistic about the season this year. Even though Te rrence Murchison and Jody Ervin are not with us anymore, hopefully the team will prosper more this year.” Vincent Reid, who is FSU’s blue chip golf player and a real credit to the team, is back again this year along with Robert Doherty. New members to the team are Eddie Fields, a transfer student from Sanford Tech., and Edward Hazley. Coach Walker says that he will be getting his team ready by holding a few pre-season matches before the regular season is to begin. a BIG GAINER - Bronco halfback Glenn McKoy flashes past Winston-Salem State University defenders in the annual Homecoming affair for some big yards.
