PAGE 6 THE VOICE NOVEMBER, 1973 SOUL SCRIPT Whal I Expoel From My Youn^ Blac*k Brother by : Violet Morris Note: This poem was submitted to the VOICE by Violet Morris, a student in Dean A. T. Robinson’s Freshman Orientation Class Brother, my young black brother Give to me respect. Give to me the love that your black sister needs. For the lost of respect is gone, Or has it faded away? My Black Brother, Is there no love and respect for a sister? Give to me the respect that I have longed for. I deserve to be respected. Find the love and respect for me, my black brother. I need respect from you. Tell me, is there any left? My black brother respect is all I want. If there is love for your sister, there is a word called “RESPECT.” Is it gone, my black brother? I want you to respect my ways of strength. Welcome my intelligence and thoughts, when I become serious about the respect you must give to me. Give to me feelings & respect my feelings, for my feelings are all that I have. I am your sister, Respect me. I am a sister who needs your respect. A sister that don’t need to be looked down on by her black brother. Is it gone? My black brother. Is it stilJ there? Does the word respect exist anymore? I just can’t explain \Iy Black Brother, how respect has disappeared from this earth. Talk to me gently Don’t abuse and use me with your disrespectful words. Bitterness, your sister does not need. Love and respect is what a sister is after indeed. Give to me all of your respect, my black brother. For your respect will have all sides in making me the young Black lady I am. As a window is fragile at the center point but is braced But is braced by a counterpart. As steps are cemented firmly to the ground leading up and down. Yes but think ...All of these are just fixtures that MAN has built. So am I a fixture among many other living fixtures; to be a foundation, a by-way, an opener and a stairway that stands upright and firmly to the ground. I am my own fortress without a doubt! F"or when shaky grounds arise, I am the only one about. Toll >fe Whal by Ardnas Wha t do I do when I want to hold you? What do I do when I want to touch you?
