PAGES THE VOICE NOVEMBER, 1973 BRONCOS PLAY A & T NOVEMBER 30 BROIVCOS OPEIV CACE SEASON The Fayetteville State University Broncos open the 1973-74 basketball season against A & T State University on November 30 in the Cumberland County Arena. The Broncos will be headed by new coach Otis Hawkins and will be defending CIAA Tourney champs. The Bronco quintet will be basically the same team this year with the exception of the loss of 6-6 Terrence Murchinson at forwa rd-center. Filling in at the guards will be All-CIAA selection James Tyus and Ruben Ruffin, senior and junior respectively. At the forward spots will be All-CIAA Alton Cogdell and Otis Newkirk, both seniors. The center or pivot-man will be sophomore Robert Wilson. The Bronco cagers finished last season with a 21-11 worksheet while posting a 12-7 CIAA mark. “We are very enthusiastic about this team,” began new coach Otis Hawkins. “We are feeling this way because I feel that we have three good All-American candidates in Otis Newkirk, Alton Cogdell, and James Tyus. Tyus earned the “Most Valuable Player Award” in the CIAA Tourney last year at Greensboro and was selected to the NCAA Southeast Regional play-offs at Salem, Virginia. What kind of basketball we can expect from the Broncos? “Offensively, we believe in a shoot-and-go offense. However, we feel that we can adopt to any situation that would be necessary to win,” Hawkins said. What will be some problems for the Broncos this season? “Our biggest problem is that we will be without a truly big man,” the FSU mentor stated. “However, we will be better in speed and shooting ability despite the size factor,” he stated. Defensively, what can be expected of the Broncos? “Defensively,” began Hawkins, “we like to keep the pressure on a team. In short, we like to play defensive basketball from base-line to base-line. So our defense is part of offense,” he concluded. Intensity ... The mood of the student is captured by the FSU photographer, John B.
