DECEMBER, 1973 THE VOICE PAGE 7 \ DISTRICT FOOTBALL COACH OF THE YEAR McDougal Named District ^‘Football Coach of the Year^^ Raymond McDougal, who in his four years as head football coach at Fayetteville State University has brought respectability to a grid program which was in the doldrums, has been named NAIA District 29 “Football Coach of the Year.” “We were in the cellar before I came to FSU in 1970,” said McDougal. “That first year we were 3-5-1, but haven’t had a losing season since.” In 1971, the Broncos were 5-4. In 1972, their mark climbed to 6- 3. This season FSU was 5-5, but lost to Shaw 23-17 in the last 12 seconds and bowed in two other games by one touchdown. McDougal, 41, is a native of Delray, Fla. He earned his B. S. in physical education at Johnson C. Smith and his M. S. at the University of Indiana. He has done additional study at the University of Indiana and at Florida A & M. As a college athletic star at Johnson C. Smith, McDougal was a letterman in four sports - football, basketball, golf and track. In football he won honorable mention All-CIAA honors as a quar terback and halfback. He was team captain. In track he ran the 440 and 880, and in basketball he was a guard. Prior to coming to Fayetteville State, he was head basketball coach and assistant football coach for five years at Bethune- Cookman College in Daytona Beach. He has also served as athletic director and coach at Volucia County Community College in Daytona Beach and at a high school in Brooksville, Fla. He also was a high school coach for one year in Lancaster, S. C. BRONCOS WIN CIAA OPENER The Broncos defeated Hampton Institute by a score of 95-82. The Broncos held a 40-35 halftime and pulled away in the final twenty minutes behind the shooting of All-CIAA performer Alton Cogdell. Cogdell ended the night with 25 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. This was Coach Otis Hawkins first conference win and he got good performance from John Burrow, Ruben Ruffin and Robert Wilson. Freshman Sterling Harris also played well and dropped in 10 points for the winners. Fayetteville State is 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. iitt * All-CIAA Broncos - Michael Wright and Sylvester Ritter were recently named to the All-CIAA Football Team for 1973. Wright is a 6-0,190 pound linebacker from Rocky Mount, NC, while Ritter is a 6-3, 263 pound tackle from Wadesboro, NC. (Photo by John B. Henderson) BRONCETTE BASKETBALL The girls’ basketball team got a chance to show all of their fans a taste of what is in store for them this season. The season not only promises to be another undefeated season, but also one with several outstanding players. Their first game was played against Fort Bragg, and this was no con test from the opening tip off. The Broncettes thoroughly roughed the team from Fort Bragg, 59-37. Several players were in double figures.
