FSU RECEIVES GULF GRANT
The Business Adminstration Department of Fayetteville
State University has received a $1,000.00 Departmental
Assistance Grant from the Gulf Oil Foundation. A spokesman for
the University said that the grant will be used for educational
programs within the Business Administration Department.
The purpose of Departmental Assistance Grants is to further
special projects proposed by selected departments in colleges and
universities. Together with other sections of its educational
assistance program. Gulf will distribute more than $2.5 million in
awards to students and institutions of higher education this year.
The funds will provide for undergraduate scholarships, graduate
fellowships, employee gift matching, capital grants and other
educational purposes.
The check was presented to Dr. Charles “A” Lyons, Jr.,
Chancellor, and Dr. G. C. Black, Chairman of the FSU Business
Administration Division by J. F. Threatt, Sales Supervisor of
Gulf, Southeastern North Carolina.
This makes a total of $4,500that FSU has received from Gulf
under the special grants program.
The Fayetteville State
University Bronco basketball
team will go to the CIAA
Tournament at Greensboro
for the third time in a row. The
Broncos were Tournament
champs last year and runners-
up in ’72.
At press time, the Broncos
had an 8-7 record in the
conference and stand 13-10
overall.

Dr. Charles “A” Lyons, Jr., Chancellor of Fayetteville State University, today corrected an
error in the announcement of Alexander Barnes of Durham, N. C. as the newly elected acting Vice
Chairman of the FSU Board of Trustees in a meeting January 24,1974. The newly elected acting Vice
Chairman is Dr. C. J. Barber, Assistant Superintendent of Wake County Schools.
Chancellor Lyons issued the following statement regarding the matter. “At its meeting of
January 24,1974, the Fayetteville State University Board of Trustees decided to postpone election of
officers which arose from the recent death of G. L. Butler, who was elected Chairman of the new
Board of Trustees in September, 1973.”
A native of Fayetteville, Dr. Butler had served as chairman of the trustee board since 1971.
Active in civic affairs, he served one term on the Fayetteville Civil Service Commission and was
reappointed to the Commission in 1972.
Butler received his early education in the Fayetteville public schools. He attended Hampton
Institute, Hampton, Virginia from 1947 to 1949 and received his Bachelor of Science degree from
Fayetteville State University in 1950. He received the dentistry degree from Howard University,
Washington, D. C. in 1955.
He taught school and was a principal in the Cumberland County Schools from 1948 until 1950. He
established his dentistry practice in 1955.
In addition to his leadership role at FSU, Butler was a member of the Board of Trustees at the
First Baptist Church in Fayetteville. He was active in professional dental organizations, serving on
the Executive Board of the Old North State Dental Society and was president of the organization from
1966 to 1967 Butler a World War II Veteran, was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society, the
