They made their first trip to the famous CIAA Tourney at Greensboro. In 1973, the Broncos returned for their second tourney par ticipation. Also in 1973, the Broncos returned to the great tournament with the determination to take all the marbles. They did. After all the shouting, tearing down the victory nets, the late great FSU Coach Thomas L. Reeves had brought the Broncos a CIAA Championship banner and trophy to enhance the already growing and progressive Fayetteville State University. In November, Otis Hawkins, a fledging pre coach from Winston-Salem Reynolds High School, was welcomed by Chan cellor Charles “A” Lyons, Jr. to keep the Broncos in contention in the CIAA basketball arena. With returning veterans Alton Cogdell, Otis Newkirk, James “Arkansas” Tyus, Ruben Ruffin, and Robert Wilson serving as an excellent nucleus for the Bronco quintet, Hawkins has had little trouble keeping the blue-and-white clad Broncos “running” toward Greensboro again this year. True, the Broncos have had to make many adjustments to the new coach and vice-versa. However, the veterans have played like they know how and the newcomers have jelled to make the FSU quintet a serious threat to take the Southern Division of the CIAA conference. OAA Announees Tourney Pairings RICHMOND, VA. - Pairings for the 29th Annual Central In tercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Basketball Tour nament were announced today by L. D. Smith said that the pairings were reversed from last year and do not designate any specific team. This will be determined on how they finish in the Conference standings during regular season play. First round pairings Thursday: First game: Second Place, Southern Division versus Third Place, Northern Division, Second game; Second Place, Northern Division versus Third Place, Southern Division; Third game: First Place, Southern Division versus Fourth Place, Northern Division and the Fourth game: First Place Northern Division versus Fourth Place, Southern Division. Three teams have clinched CIAA tourney berths and they include Norfolk State College, Virginia State College and Virginia Union University. Fayetteville State University is the defending champion. Tickets for the CIAA tourney are moving at a brisk pace and can be secured at any member institution or by writing the Ticket Box office, Greensboro Coliseum, 1921 West Lee Street, Green sboro, North Carolina. BRONCO NETTERS TO FACE 12 OPPONENTS The Fayetteville State University tennis team will face twelve tennis opponents for the ’74’ season. The announcement was made by Dr. William Bell, Director of FSU’s Athletic Department. We had a very lack-lustre season last year,” began head tennis Coach Page Saunders, “we are hoping to improve much this season.” The season will begin March 6, when the Broncos will visit Pembroke State University.
