THE VOICE
MARCH, 1974
SOUL SCRIPT
Sandra Wells, a graduating senior has had some of her poems
selected and published in the Annual Anthology of College Poetry.
This volume is a compilation of the finest poetry written by the
college men and women of America, representing every state in
the country. Selections were made from many thousands of
poems submitted.
Now, Sandra has submitted a pottion of her poems entitled
My Family to the VOICE. “My Family” includes “My Black
Man,” “Black Me” and “My Baby.” The signature at the end of
her poems is Sandra spelled in reverse. This type of signature
was Sandra’s idea which breaks away from the pseudonymn used
by some writers. Sandra is a Speech and Drama major receiving
a BA Degree. Her plans are to continue her education in graduate
school.
My Black Man
Controlled like a ray of sunlight,
Straight, forward, and direct
Piercing my very being with his maleness
I ache to know him better.
Distant in origin
Yet so near in warmth.
Radiant is his being.
Shining brightly are his eyes
Tanning me golden brown with his love.

Black Me
Behaves like a leaf blowing in the wind caught up in a drift,
Never staying on a steady course.
I am a woman.
But sooner or later my unchartered
Journey comes to a fatal end.
I hit the ground and cease to be.
I dry out in the faltering rays of the sunlight.
Dampness and moisture during darkness and early daylight soak
me.
Bent rays of sunlight dry me more
I’m lifted from my grave by a gust of wind
Shredding my already decaying self.
One last moment of joy., in flight
I’m falling again!! Downward, never to rise again to face. ..

My Baby
Asleep he’s like a hidden treasure
Untouched by human hands or greed.
Breathing gently and moving slightly
A quick smile covers his face.
Gone as quickly as it came.
He stirs...moves more.
He’s awake!
Looking through sleep-filled eyes
He blinks.
He’ll get up now and want to eat -
But no he drifts again into
Peaceful slumber.

The Real Junkies
With eyes running but roaming Around for someone-anything
to rrrrrrrip off
He, the black junkie, sick and inbound
Towards death’s last degree
Preys incessantly
Until some cop’s bullets still him
Or prison regulations fill him
While the real junkies (the white comes that is)
Continue to walk free
With their profuse habit
Of oppressing and exploiting
Black peoples liberty.
Dawn
The quick-quiet sun
Rises its eastemly bed
Looks west ward
Then sheds
Its holy light
Into my empty
And wanting soul
While woman black moaning
Opens her warm wet womb
To swallow me.
