FSU Commencement
The Ninety-Seventh Commencement Exercises at Fayetteville State University was held Sunday
afternoon May 12, in the Cumberland County Memorial Auditorium (Highway 301 South) at 2:45 p.m.
Addressing the graduating class of ’74 was the Honorable Howard Nathaniel Lee, first black
mayor of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Lee, who is presently in his second term as mayor of Chapel
Hill, was introduced by Fayetteville State University Chancellor Dr. Charles “A” Lyons, Jr.
Chancellor Lyons presided over the ceremonies. Dr. W. C. Brown, Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs at FSU, presented the candidates for degrees and they were conferred by Dr. Lyons.
The Chapel Hill Mayor is a native of Lithonia, Georgia and received his undergraduate training
at Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, Georgia. He is a recipient of the Master of Social Work
degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
In 1971, Mayor Lee was awarded the Honorary Degree Doctor of Laws from Shaw University.
Lee is active in civic affairs and holds membership on numerous boards and commissions among
which are The Southern Regional Council, National Association of Social Workers, N. C. Heart
Association. He is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the National Conference of Social
Welfare.
He is a former vice-chairman of the N. C. Democratic Party (1970-72) and is currently a
Democratic National Committeeman from North Carolina. Mayor Lee is a member of the Board of
Trustees Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Lee served more than two years in the Army and spent more than a year in Korea on active duty.
His professional experiences include Probation Officer, Juvenile Domestic Relations Court,
Savannah, Georgia; Director, Youth Program, Education Improvement Program, Duke University,
Durham, North Carolina; Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology, North Carolina Central
University, Durham, North Carolina.
Mayor Lee’s honors and awards include Georgia State Teacher’s Honor Student’s Award; Fort
Valley State College Honor Student’s Award, Atlanta Branch NAACP Achievement Award (1969);
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Achievement.
He is married to the former Lillian Wesley of Savannah, Georgia and they are the parents of
three children; Angela (19), a sophomore at Radcliff College, Cambridge, Mass.; Ricky (17), a
senior at Chapel Hill High School) and Karin Alexis (3).
Music was furnished by the University Choir under the direction of Dr. Lemuel Berry, Jr., and
James Evans, Director of University Bands.
A Unique Workshop

FAYETTEVILLE - Fayetteville State University hosted more than forty law enforcement officials in
a unique three week program.
The Program was a joint effort between the North Carolina Department of Social Rehabilitation
and Fayetteville State University’s Division of Continuing Education.
A spokesman for the university said that the program Intensive Study in Police Science, focused
on pre-release and after-release programs in social rehabilitation. During the three week session,
workshop participants was involved in concentrated sessions in two academic courses in a variety of
specialized rehabilitation study areas.
This is the first effort by a North Carolina institution of higher learning to work with Social
Rehabilitation officials in this type of program. Workshop participants were selected from all areas
of North Carolina.
The workshop was held on the Fayetteville State University campus at the modem and well
equipped Rudolph Jones Student Center. A select group of talented consultants and resources
complimented the instructional program. The workshop included more than 100 hours of actual
classroom instruction and the varied experience of the participants enhanced the program.

MISS FAYETTEVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY FOR ’74-’75 is
lovely Ophelia Byther of Ellerbe, North Carolina. Ophelia was
chosen in a recent campus-wide election at FSU and is active in
many organizations on campus. She is a member of the Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, cadet captain - Air Force ROTC, Arnold
