BRONCO FOOTBALL FORECAST FOR 1974
CIAA APPROVES BOWL-CHANGES BASKETBALL
Broncos Look Good For ^74 Season
FAYETTEVILLE - The Fayetteville State University football team will face nine opponents for the
1974 season.
The announcement was made by Dr. William Bell, Director of Athletics at Fayetteville State
University.
However, the Ray McDougal coached squad will have two open dates on the schedule - Sep
tember 14 and October 5.
“We are hoping to fill these open slots,” said McDougal, “so that we can have an eleven game
schedule.”
The FSU eleven, who posted a 5-5 mark last year, will open the season at home against Federal
City College September 7.
“We will field one of the youngest teams in the CIAA this year,” began McDougal, “because 13
players did not report for the 1973 season and graduation also hurts us.”
“We lost Craig Sills and Marion Wigfall at the signal-calling spots and ALL-CIAA linebacker
Mike Wright, Stan Peters, and Lorenzo Haywood at linebackers positions.
Richard Johnson, Bernard Reynolds, Tony Morehead and Clarence Jackson are gone from
defensive secondary by way of graduation. ALL-CIAA wide receiver Clarence Pointe and William
Smith will be missing because of graduation along with center Fedrick Wilkerson. All these players
were starters and will be sorely missed,” said McDougal.
The Broncos possess one of the strongest running games in the CIAA led by 12 touchdown
producer for 1973 running back James Godwin. The backup crew in the running department has
capable Glenn McKoy, Tim Heath, Cornelius Young and Prentiss Bennett sharing duties.
Sylvester Ritter will lead a host of veteran offensive linesmen for “74”. Ritter, All-NAIA for the
past three seasons has teammates Jackie Simmons, Jeffrey Dawson, and James Glasson with him on
the Bronco offensive front.
The defense will have strong linesmen John Young, Reginald Broadnax, James Sanders, James
Gaddy and Charlie Boyd, all starters.
The 1974 Fayetteville State University Bronco football schedule:
BASKETBALL FORMAT
ALTERED FOR TOIJRIVEY
At a meeting June 9, in
Hampton, Virginia, the
Central Intercollegiate
Athletic Association approved
a post-season football bowl
game match-up between the
CIAA champion and the
Southern Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference.
The bowl game will be
December 14 in Atlanta,
Georgia.
The basketball format
will be changed somewhat
next season. The CIAA
Athletic Directors voted to
continue the Northern and
Southern Divisions, but only
games played against CIAA
teams within their own
divisions will count in the
official championship stan
dings.
The two top teams in each
division will qualify
automatically for the tour
nament at Greensboro, while
the four other teams in each
division will play preliminary
divisional tournaments, with
the top two in each division
gaining berths in the eight-
team championship.
In the past the top four
teams in each division
automatically qualified for
the tournament.
The CIAA’s athletic
directors also approved in
principle a joint basketball
tournament with the Mid-
Eastern Athletic Conference
in Greensboro in 1976. A joint
committee of representatives
from each conference will
work out the details and then
the package will be presented
at the CIAA’s mid-winter
meeting in December for final
approval.
Also approved was a
program calling for the CIAA
constitution to be amended at
the mid-winter meeting to
permit creation of a women’s
sports division, with women
competing in the team sports
of volleyball, tennis, golf and
track.
