CAGERS READY FOR OPENER AT ARENA
DEC. 4 AGAINST FEDERAL CITY COLLEGE
Page 7
Coach Otis Hawkins hopes
to have a few surprises when
the basketball curtain for the
Fayetteville State University
Broncos opens December 4
against F^eral City College
in the Cumberland County
Arena.
“I think we’ll surprise a
lot of people,” coach Hawkins
said. “Last year we
outrebounded only one team,
and ironically that was
Johnson C. Smith, the tallest
team in the CIAA, and we
outrebounded them twice. But
we are planning to improve in
that category.”
The Broncos intend to
improve their 9-7 CIAA record
and 13-13 overall finish of last
season. Coach Hawkins has
some strong veterans
returning and has recruited
some proze athletes.
The top returnees in
clude: Robert Wilson, 6-5
junior, forward; Curtis Ross,
6-3 junior, forward; Sam
Smith, 6-5 senior, forward;
Monte Baker, 6-2 junior,
forward; Stacy Burrs, 5-9
sophomore, guard; and John
Barrows, 5-11 sophomore,
guard.
“Wilson is only 6-5, but he
can play like 6-8 or 6-9,” said
the coach, and Ross is a pure
shooter. The opposition will
really have to stay on him.”
“Stacy is one of the
quickest men on the team. He
is a clever and knowledgeable
player, in addition to being a
great little quarterback.
“Monte Baker has im
proved tremendously; he is
quick and a good leaper. Sam
Smith’s coming back was a
pleasant surprise and he will
be valuable to the team,” the
coach said.
Newcomers to the Bronco
lineup is headed by Herbert
Mclver, a muscular 6-7i^;
pivotman from Richmond
Technical Institute, Hamlet,
NC, and averaged 32 points
and 20 rebounds last season.
Myron McAuley, a 6-6 center-
forward, also came from
Richmond Tech and averaged
12 points and 11 rebounds.
Kenneth Walker is a 6-5
forward transfer from Merced
College in California, who
averaged 21 points a game,
while Walter Holland, 6-9
center, transferred from
Baltimore Community
College in Maryland where he
averaged 15 points and 13
rebounds.
