DECEMBER 17, 1974 VOICE Page 7 Godwin Becomes First Back At FSU By John B. Henderson FAYETTEVILLE - James Godwin, Fayetteville State University’s fleet fullback (9.2 sprinter) reached one of his milestones as a football player. He surpassed the 1000-yard mark in individual rushing as a running back thus becoming the first football player at the North Carolina-based institution to achieve such a feat. The final season showed the Fayetteville born speedster with 177 carries for 1071 yards gained. Godwin averaged 5.6 yards per carry during an eleven game schedule. “Ifeel that it is quite an honor to gain over a thousand yar^ in a season,” said Godwin, “but I want to do even better next season.” Godwin was also the team’s leading scorer with a season high of 54 points and nine touchdowns. A candidate for All-CIAA honors, Godwin is also an All-American in track and field at FSU. The muscular 6-1, 210 pounder holds records in the broad and is a 9.2 sprinter in the mile relay event. “James is a true All-American”, says his track coach Walter Johnson, “he is very coachable and has the desire to excel and is a dedicated athlete.” A business administration major at FSU, Godwin has one more year of football eligibility and looks forward to next year. The Broncos finished the season with an overall record of 4-7 and a CIAA record of 2 wins and six losses. 7 itim (i ALL THE WAY BROXCOS HAPPY HOLmAYS BROJVCOS: I Thooc|li\- Wc iWl Ji Wmppe4 up If'" mstDE BROIVCO SPORTS With William Nicliols The first game of the season was a hot cake with no one to catch it. The game ended on our side of the court. The score FSU 79 to Federal City 78. Turnovers were the cause of the poorly played game. The number of turnovers were 26. The Broncos played zone defense the first half. But to no avail. Federal City shot the eyes out the basket. So Coach Hawkins came back in the second half with a man-to-man-defense. The man-to-man-defense saved the game. But the game was not over. Federal City kept creeping to the basket with the ball. Next thing all the players and Coach Hawkins were saying we need some action. When the score was tied, Hawkins called young and dependable Elson Floyd, a freshman of Winston-Salem, N. C. He scored the winning point on a free throw. Coach Hawkins likes Floyd’s composure. Floyd won that game under pressure. “In time of war prepare for war,” states Coach Hawkins. How true these words were and they were true December 2 at Cumberland County Arena. About the game, the Broncos played loose and not as good as expected. But the main thing is to win. Conditioning and a little more experience from the team and we’ll have a good season. FSU has the guts it takes to be winners. So let’s support the Bronco basketball team. Games are played at the Cumberland County Arena, on US 301 South. FSU basketball program belongs to the citizens of Fayetteville. So let’s all support the team. Sylvester Ritter James Godwin THREE BROI¥€OSMAKE ALL-CIAA SQUAD Three Fayetteville State football players were named recently to the All-CIAA football squad for the 1974 campaign. They are All-American fullback and track sprinter James Godwin, Sylvester Ritter, and John Young, both linesmen. Godwin, a 6-1, 215 pound Fayetteville, N. C. senior business administration major with another year of playing eligibility, rushed for more than 1000 yards and became the first football player at FSU to accomplish such a feat. This was the first time these three have been honored by the league. However, Ritter has beer named to All-NAIA three times in the past. Ritter, a native of Wadesboro,N.C. and a political science major, is a 6-5, 253 pound senior guard who is eyeing the pro ranks. Young, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a 260 pound tackle standing a 6-6 and is also eyeing the pros. He is a physical education major who will graduate in May. John Young
