The Broncoettes won the consolation game over Virginia State’s girls, 60-45. The team defeated Hampton Institute, 86-44, in the first round and about two hours later the same day faced St. Augustine’s College and dropped a thriller, 56-54. Ironically, the FSU team lost its two games to St. Augustine’s College who eventually won the tourney at Petersburg. Gail Cameron, fancy shooting forward for the Broncoettes, was named to the All-Tournament team. Coach Taylor has an outstanding record as mentor for the Broncoettes having compiled a fabulous 43-4 record over the past two and one half years. Teams represented in the first annual CIAA Tourney were Norfolk State College, St. Paul’s College, St. Augustine College, Hampton Institute, Elizabeth City State University, Winston- Salem State University, Livingstone College, Virginia State College, and Fayetteville State University. BY JOHN B. HENDERSON The Fayetteville State University Broncos will be in Greensboro, N.C., February 27 for the opening round of the fabulous CIAA basketball tournament. However, the Broncos got there the hard way by beating rival Shaw University in the first annual CIAA Satelite Tournament at Fayetteville, 81-76. The Broncos, coached by second year-mentor Otis Hawkins, finished the regular season with a 7-9 CIAA mark and 9-13 overall. Presently the Broncos have a 10-13 overall worksheet. The Broncos won the 1973 CIAA Tournament and was runner- up in the 1972 affair at Greensboro under late coach Tommie Reeves. Fayetteville State defeated Shaw University in two regular season meetings, 90-85 and 91-86 in overtimes. In the CIAA Satelite Tourney, the Broncos had to come from behind to defeat the Shaw Bears and trailed by as many as 20 points in the first stanza. Bronco 6-7 freshman Steve Cobham made the difference on the boards for the FSU club hauling down eleven rebounds and dropping in 14 points. Robert Wilson, junior Bronco forward, canned 22 points for the winners, followed by Walt Holland,10; Herb Mclver, 15; and John Barrows, 14. MOONLIGHT SONATA?
