Henderson) Dr. Robinson is New Athletic Director and Head Coacli A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, has been named the new Director of Athletics and head basketball coach at Fayetteville State University (N.C.) He is Dr. Joe R. Robinson. Fayetteville State University Chancellor, Dr. Charles “A” Lyons, Jr., made the announcement and said the appointment is effective July 1. Robinson, 37, succeeds Dr. William Bell as Athletic Director and Otis Hawkins as head basketball coach. Bell announced his retirement after five years as head of the athletic department and Hawkins was relieved of coaching duties after two seasons as head basketball coach. Dr. Robinson, who finished West Charlotte (N.C.) High School received his undergraduate training at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, Maryland in 1961, received the M.S. degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, in 1967. He received the doctorate degree from Arizona State University. FSU Chancellor Lyons said on the appointment of Robinson; “He has the capabilities for both positions and is keen on doing both. He certainly has the background. This is a plus for us.” No stranger to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference (CIAA), Robinson was head basketball coach at Maryland Eastern Shore in 1966. Over the next five years, his teams won 75 per cent of their games, including one un beaten season. Maryland- Eastern Shore, then a member of the Central In tercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), was runner-up in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament once and reached the quar terfinals another time under Robinson. Robinson has not coached since leaving the Maryland school in 1971. He was an assistant professor of physical education and director of intramural athletics at Jackson State University for two years, then a teaching assistant at Arizona State two more years. “I had to get out of coaching for a while in order to get my doctorate,” he said. “However, it was always my intention to get back into it as an athletic director and for a few more years of coaching.” On the basketball program at FSU Robinson said; “I’m a winner by tradition. Fayetteville State University won the CIAA basketball championship in 1973 and want the image back again. Dr. Robinson is married and has four sons, ages 16, 13, 11, and 6.
