Coach at FStJ Looks To Winning Season “I am a winner by tradition.” These are the words of new Fayetteville State University basketball coach Joe R. Robinson. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Robinson inherits a team that finished the season with a 10-15 overall record and 8-10 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Fayetteville State has a fine nucleus returning for the 75-76 cage campaign. Heading the list include Walt Holland, a 6-9 scorer from Baltimore, Maryland; Herb Mclver, a 6-8 muscular rebounder and leading scorer last season with 15 points and eight rebounds per contest; John Barrows, play making guard and team leader; Stacy Burrs, play-making guard; Robert Wilson, sharp-shooting forward; Monte Baker, guard; Marian Moore, 6-9 forward; Curtis Ross, pure-shooting guard; and Wilbert Washington, forward. Fayetteville State won the CIAA in 1973 and coach Robinson wants to bring the championship back to FSU. “I’ve only been here a short while but I know we have strong men in Walt Holland and Herb Mclver. Also, John Barrows, Mike Ross, and Robert Wilson and Stacy Burrs can provide added depth,” he said. “Seniors Monte Baker and Wilbur Washington will give us a team with plenty of experience and I look forward to the up coming season with enlJiusiasm and great expectations.” The Bronco cagers open the season with Virginia State Dec. 3, and will participate in the Tip-Off Tourney in Fayetteville, Dec. 5- 6. ’75 Basketball Schedule Reid Leads FSV Golfers Vincent Reid, a cool and hard-hitting young golfer from Greensboro, North Carolina has lead FSU to three straight early fall tournament wins for the ’75-76 campaign. The young golfer, last year’s CIAA champion and a senior business administration major, has captured medalist honors in two straight tourney. Reid fired a three-over par 75 in the October FSU Invitational golf tourney at the local Gates Four Golf Club to capture medalist honors and lead the Bronco golfers to a 26-stroke team win over visiting CIAA golf teams St. Augustine’s College, Virginia Union, and Virginia State College. Reid dropped three birdies and finished with a card of 38-37. Three other Bronco golfers shot in the 70’s andthey,vere Andre SpiSprings, 77; Dennis WilliamsrtTally Harris, both ties with 78’s. Broncos Randy Combs and Willie Manning each shot 83. FSU had a team total of 312; St. Augustine’s 338; Virginia Union, 344; and Virginia State, 349. Also, the Broncos traveled to Richmond, Virginia to participate in the Virginia Union In vitational and captured first place. The FSU club won the top four individual spots and swept a 23-stroke team victory at the tourney. Bronco ace Vincent Reid won medalist honors with a three-over-par 39-35-75. The next three spots went to FSU golfers: Wally Harris 39-36-75; Dennis williams, 40-36-76; and Randy Combs, 40-37-77. The Broncos compiled a four-man total of 302 strokes over participants St. Augustine’s, 325; Virginia Union, 367, Virginia State, 369; and St. Paul’s, 370. The Broncos finished the month of October with a win the CIAA five-team field invitational at Raleigh, North Carolina, by 14 strokes. FSU finished with a score of 303, St. Augustine had 317, Winston-Salem State 355, Virgmia State 360 and Shaw University, 367. Bronco Dennis Williams led the FSU team with medalist honors at 74. In case you don’t know who the person it, it’s Mr. James Godwin, senior running back for the (6-2 overall) Bronco football team. Godwin has a possible chance of being selected by Mutual Black Network as the “Offensive Player of the Year” if he keeps up his present performance. Last year, Walter Payton of Jackson State won the honor and is starting for the Chicago Bears. We know you can do it Mr. Godwin and the Broncos are behind you all the way.
