NOVEMBER 30, 1975 THE VOICE PAGE 3 THE BOARD OF VISITORS AT FSU. FSIT PREDICTED TO MEET XCATE STA]\DARDS The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, based in Washington, D.C., is con sidered the most prestigious rating agency of institutions of higher education in the country. These are divided into six regions in terms of regional rating agencies. As an example, the Southern Association for Colleges and Schools is the rating agency charged with the respon sibility of rating schools in the south, including elementary and secondary schools as well as institutions of higher learning. However, NCATE is authorized to evaluate teacher education programs in in- XHE roi C E.XTER by Charles Jones The University Coun seling Center is one of many programs that Fayetteville State University has to offer to students. It offers a professional counseling service which consists of individual and group coun seling. Also offered are Education and Career Counseling. These aid the student in deciding upon the best choice for a major and explains any additional ex perience a student might need. The Counseling Center also provides a testing ser vice. It administers the S.A.T. and the admission test. The testing service offers a Placement Inventory Test designed to aid academic advisors in choosing the right area for freshmen students to pursue in order to obtain a degree. A third test ad ministered by the testing service is the Interest Ap titude Test which measures “one’s touch with reality”. A final test offered is the College Level Examination in which a student may be given credit for certain courses if able to pass the test. The University Coun seling Center works in con junction with the Veteran’s Administration to help the veteran decide upon a second career. The counselor for the veterans receive checks and that dependent are informed of the benefits they are en titled to. Another service offered is the Freshman Orientation Program, which lasts for stitutions of higher learning throughout the country in all fifty states. Because of our thrust for national repute in teacher education, Fayetteville State University is undergoing an institutional self study for NCATE, which began July 4, 1975, and will terminate in August 1976. Subsequently, a visiting evaluation team from NCATE will evaluate the teacher education program at F.S.U. from October 3, to October 6, 1976. These evaluative ^tes have been recently confirmed by NCATE. With respect to the in stitution of self study, if an institution aspires for ac creditation by the prestigious Council under discussion, then that institution must meet the five basic standards utilized by NCATE to access the viability of its teacher education programs. These standards are as follows: Standard 1-Curricular for basic programs, Standard 2- Faculty for basic programs. Standard 3-Students in the basic programs. Standard 4- resources and facilities for basic programs. Standard 5- Evaluation program review and long range planning. In terms of these five basic standards, twenty-two specific standards evolve which require the institution to comceptualize its teacher education programs in terms of quality and quantity as these constructs relate to preparing competent and productive teachers and other school personnel for rendering efficient services and leadership in the public schools. The director of the current NCATE institution of self study. Dr. Walter Pace, asserts that F.S.U. perceives as meeting the standards of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and is therefore eagerly looking forward to the for the fall of 1976. In this regard, the Chancellor and the Provost of the University are giving their fullest support in this endeavor. According to the director of the NCATE institution of self study the Institutional Report will be presented to NCATE in three specific volumes: Volume 1-Basic Teacher Education Programs; Volume 2-Faculty Exhibit; Volume 3-Alumni Exhibit. Editor’s Note Dr. Walter Pace, the current Director of NCATE institution of self study has been evaluating programs for NCATE since 1971. |RAIN1IHX\ DAIC.
