TRACK MEET WOOTEIV STARS James Wooten, senior track sprinter at Fayetteville State, turned in a sparkling performance at the April 2-3 South Carolina State Relays in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Wooten, coached by veteran FSU track mentor Walter Johnson, won the 100- yard dash event in a time of 9.8 and set a meet record when he won the 200-year dash. The Goldsboro, N. C. native shattered former All- Pro wide receiver Bob Hayes’ record in the 200-yard dash with a blistering time of 21.3, to take first place in both events. Coach Johnson has guided many other FSU trackmen to fame which include All- American James Godwin, a high jump champion and football great, and Maurice Franks, champion sprinter. Other schools par ticipating in the meet were South Carolina State, Pem broke State, and Norfolk State. still has a strong nucleus of veterans returning. McDougal, having ex perienced his best year in ‘75 with a 7-3 mark, was awarded the Dist. 29 “Coach of the Year” NAIA award and was named “Co-Coach of The Year” in the CIAA conference with Norfolk’s Dick Price. It was the second time in three years that the NAIA has bestowed the honor on the Florida native. Among veterans retur ning will be Dave Jones, Phillip Platt, Lester Brown, Ron Crawford, Mike Smith, Andrea Sloan, and Carlos Bailey. “We might have to rely on a passing attack this year,” began the fifth year mentor, in the past we’ve relied on our ground attack but we lost some fine personnel in Heath (Tim), James Godwin, and James Tucker.” Other graduation losses include Maurice Franks, Jackie Simmons, Charlie Boyd, Reggie Broadneaus, James Saunders, James Gaddy, Morris Godwin, Ar- mond Wrenn, Wayne Blyth- wood, and Jeff Dawson.
