EDITORIAL PAGE A Message From IVew SGA Prexy Greetings Fellow Bron cos, This is a honor from God that I am able to address you as President of Fayetteville State University Student Government Association. First of all let me take time out to thank you for electing me as your student body president. It shows that you have placed a lot of faith and trust in me. You have done your first duty as a member of the Univerisity Family. Your responsibility does not stop with the election; it is only the beginning. Holding the office of president of the Student Government Association is by no means fun or games. It requires a lot of hard work and dedicated service. Let us not sit back and criticize the president and other student body officials. Instead, give them your moral support. It is vitally needed. As we progress into FSU’s 100th year of existence, let us have a positive attitude toward ourselves, our fellow Broncos, and our University. In these critical times, let us awaken from that dream of a revolution taking place and start making it a reality. Our purpose here at FSU lies beyond the point of academics and partying alone. However, our purpose should embrace a totality of education, religion, creativity of the mind, and affairs of the world which are vital to our very existence on earth. In short, we should be about the business of planning and determining what we will be or where we are going once we leave this institution. Be active in affairs that occur on campus as well as in the city. Once we leave, it will be much too late to catch up on information we should have received during our college years. In this FSU’s centennial year and the nation’s bi centennial, let us pledge ourselves to start forming positive attitudes ,and place our values on things that we can profit from In life later on. Although I know a lot of hard work will have to be put forth this year, I am sure we can make it one of the best in the history of FSU. I know that I am going to do all within my power to satisfy the needs and wants of the student body. I know that positive goals can be accomplished this year with your help and support and the strength given to us by the Almighty God. May God bless each of you. Earl W. Moore, Jr. SGA President, 1976-77 JVew ]fliss FSU Speaks Out I would like very much to thank all of you beautiful people who supported me in my campaign and also during the run-off. Also, I thank those who supported other candidates because in doing so you (the voters) made the race for Miss FSU competitive and worthwhile. However, upon becoming the new Miss FSU, I am beginning to find the at mosphere among my peers to be a little different before I won the election. It appears that I am supposed to go “out of my way’’ to speak and greet in dividuals. Now really, is this being realistic? Nobody can greet and speak to people all the time. Jesus Christ didn’t even do that, I don’t think. So please don’t knock me. Certainly I appreciate being Miss FSU and I will try to uphold the name and remain “cool, calm, and collected,” as best I can at all times and as much as possible. But I do have emotions and I do have feelings. So, if by chance I do lose control of myself, please forgive me for being like you- a human being. Turning to another sub ject, I would like to see some changes made regarding the two crowns presently worn by Miss FSU. Specifically speaking, I would prefer that the Football Team choose Miss Homecoming and the student body choose Miss FSU. I realize that some of the coeds wanted to become Miss Homecoming, but in order to do so, you had to become Miss FSU. Perhaps the new SGA President will hear my plea so that things can be changed very soon. And I hope by the time this football season starts we will have a Homecoming Queen and Miss FSU~separated again. Another point I would like to make is that of student unity. We are here for an education, degree, and hopefully success. Someone has said that success is the root of all evil. We all want to be successful but we don’t want someone else to get success. Most of us have come from very humble beginnings. Whether we like to admit or not, most of us came from low income homes, brought up in a two-bedroom house with seven or more kids. But remember, it was your mother who said, “Child you are no better than anyone else, be kind to your fellowman and do the best you can.” I don’t think that she meant that you were worse than anybody but just don’t get “too big” for yourself. ■ I believe some have pushed this advise aside but its never too late for us to come together. I can’t force anyone to follow me but I ask you to follow your new STUDENT GOVERNMENT PRESI DENT. I’ll be behind Earl, will you? A TRUE BRONCO Joy Van Hook Miss FSU 1976-77 BEST WISHES TO THE CLASS OF '76 ‘ ■ 'lOvrfDixi'iV ^ .'ir-isvinU The Football Ntan at FStJ ~ Great Expectations by Mrs. A. T. Robinson, FSU Associate Dean of Students for Women “The football man is a man with spirit, dash and team work, who is an in spiration to all.” The football man does not have to be the huskiest or biggest man on campus, but he is a special type, physically. He is to be (1) a man, (2) a student and (3) a football player possessing a clean and strong mind and body. Being physically fit is a must. Therefore, a good nutritious body building and tissue repairing food is a must. A well balanced diet chocked full of growth promoting, regulating and energy giving food and good sleeping facilities and habits should be a priority. Being mentally alert is a must whether on the gridiron or elsewhere. A thirst for knowledge, the drive to demonstrate excellence on or off the field should be a part of this man. He should be, in sum, physically, mentally, socially and emotionally stable. I want to see you on the Dean’s list receiving awards on Awards Day as well as at the Athletic Banquet. I see an above average man aiming to be a star, dreaming of pro football. A working and winning man. One who knows and practices good manners. A gentleman indeed. You may never be a Packer, Viking, Redskin, Cowboy or Dolphin, but you can be a gentleman and that will put you in their class. I see you with the highest regards for the women on this campus. They too need to see this in you. It will help considerably, I think. When you go away to visit other schools, look sporty and neat. We all like to see and respect the well dressed man. It brings out that inner self. Clothes have character and say something about the person. We also like to see you look nice and neat at home. It is definitely a morale booster. I never expect a football man to be caught in places off limits on campus because respect for rules and regulations is your game and it should be a part of you throughout. The buck should not stop when the game is over. The coaches expect you to stay out of taboo places and represent them well. Respect them as well as yourselves. I do not expect fights during a game but friendly rivalry between student bodies whom you play and learning and practicing the lesson of humility. Knowing how to accept winning as well as loosing. Self control should be paramount, after all, a man without self control is like a barrel without hoops, it soon tumbles to pieces. I expect good principles, morals and character. Your game to me is fair play, team work, rivalry, competition, discipline, hardwork and respect for rules and regulations. I expect good leadership and fellowship. You’re on the stage from August until the season ends. Don’t let it stop there, but develop other interests. The Lord gave you two ends to use, one to think with, the other to sit on, heads you win, tails you loose. Continue to be involved in activities. Get a project on campus, lead it. The learning tree near Hood Hall could use some help. I am told that it smuggles and is highly potent with you know what. That spot on campus could be cleaned up. You could provide service in the fall for new students if time avails itself. You’re needed to help keep men out of the dormitories - when they should not be there. You need our support and we need yours. You’re a deserving team and you manifested it this last season. I am proud of you and I want you to know it. Continue to work hard when you’re on the turf, carpet or synthetic surface and remember when facing your opponents that: All men are alike, all teams are good! None are weak. It makes you fight harder. Don’t be too predictable to your opponents - keep’em guessing and as you go forth to make readiness for the fall, in the words of Vince Lombardi, I leave these thoughts with you “Winning Isn’t Everything, It’s The Only Thing”. I agree with Lombardi if it’s done fair, if it isn’t corrupt, if it’s honorable and if you follw the ethical route with good principles and clear living. Then and only then, do I agree that winning is the only thing and should be the ultimate aim. I feel that if these expectations are met and dealt with, you will have prepared yourselves for a respectable man, citizen, bachelor or husband and father. I love you. Good Luck.
