PAGE 8 THE VOICE MARCH-APRIL, 1976 p .i ClAA GOLF CHAMP—Fayetteville State University golf coach Moses Walker congratulates the 1976 CIAA Golf Champion Andre Springs at the CIAA Golf Tourney recently played at Winston Lake Golf Course in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Springs, a physical education major, is a freshman from Charlotte, N.C. and is a budding golf superstar. The FSU team won all honors in the CIAA this year and was undefeated in nine matches. Winston Lakes Golf Course May 1. The Bronco team, com posed of Vincent Reid, Andre Springs, Randy Combs, Dennis Williams, Clyde Harris, and John Prince, finished the regular season undefeated in match play with a 9-0 perfect record. Freshman Andre Springs of Charlotte, North Carolina, was crowned the new CIAA Golf Champ for 1976 by shooting an individual two- day total of 78-75-153. Last year’s champ Vin cent Reid has a two-day total of 158 while Randy Combs fired a 159. HOMECOMING HOMECOMINB FOR 1976 IS OCTOBER 30 The FSU Bronco Football team will host Elizabeth City State on October 30 for the annual homecoming football game. Last year the broncos lost a 6-0 squeaker to the Vikings at their homecoming. FStl Golf Dynasty Looming by John B. Henderson, Director Sports Information Coach Moses Walker has reason to smile these days. He virtually has a golf dynasty on the horizon at Fayetteville State University (N.C.) Walker’s team, a member of the CIAA conference, went through the entire season this year undefeated and ran away with the CIAA Golf Title for the second straight year. The Bronco team won nine mat ches. “We said at the beginning of the year that we wanted to go undefeated in the con ference. Our fellows took all the matches and they deserve great praise,” said the Raleigh born native. Indeed, Coach Walker has a super bunch of athletes heading by Greensboro native Vincent Reid, last year’s CIAA Golf Champ. Although Reid did notwin the individual honor this year-it went to another member of the FSU Golf Team-he is responsible for the splendid play of the squad. “Vincent is the team captain and is very consistent. Vincent has won medalist honors several times this year with his low scoring.” said Walker, a former caddy himself. However, Coach Walker knows that although Vincent is a senior and will be leaving, a strong freshman nam^ Andre Springs, this year’s CIAA Golf Champion, is standing is the wings ready to take over. Andre Springs, a native of Charlotte, won the “Most Outstanding Freshman Award” at the school’s athletic banquet recently, while Reid took “Most Valuable Player” honors. This year in the CIAA Golf Tourney plan at Winston Lake Golf Course in Winston-Salem, N.C., the Bronco team led all CIAA teams by 25 strokes after the first round of the two- day event. The Broncos finished the tourney with a romping 57- stroke win over J.C. Smifi, St. Augustine, Winston-Salem State, Livingstone and Shaw University. St. Paul’s and Virginia Union did not par ticipate in the final round. Freshman Bronco Looming Superstar by John B. Henderson, Director Sports Information Who is Andre Springs...Where does he at tend school...What sports does he play...Where is his home? Rest assured the Charlotte, North Carolina freshman golfer at Fayet teville State University (N.C.) will be well known before he finishes matribulating. In his first year, the former West Mecklenburg High School star, claimed the prized “CIAA Individual Championship” Award at the CIAA Golf Tourney at Winston Lake Golf Course in Winston- Salem, N.C. recently. Springs also was a member of the All-CIAA golf team, which the FSU Bronco golfers dominated. He was awarded the “Most Out standing Freshman” Award at the school’s Athletic Banquet. “I can’t say enough about Andre,” began golf coach Moses Walker, “he is a tremendous person.” “I feel that having him and Vincent Reid (last CIAA Champ) on the same squad made us practically un stoppable this year. Although I’m not taking any credit from the other players on the squad who helped us to an un defeated season (9-0) and a 57- stroke CIAA Tourney win recently - I am happy that he’ll be back next year,” said a smiling Walker. Andre chose Fayetteville State over offers from J. C. Smith, South Carolnia State, Livingstone College and Wingate College, because his sister, Jackie attends school at FSU. “I had offers to go elsewhere but Jackie enticed me to come to FSU. I’d heard a lot about the golf team and I felt I could offer something,” said the modest Springs. A physical education major, Andre is a very good student at FSU. He started playing golf at age twelve and credits his older brother as a motivating factor in inspiring his golf career. “My oldest brother worked at a driving range in Charlotte and this started my interest in the game,” he said. “However, I owe a lot of credit to Don Lemon (golf coach at West Mecklenburg) for pushing my career.” Andre need not worry about being pushed any more. The CIAA rivals will see to it that he gets plenty of com petition. But then Andre does not seem too worried, “I have the confidence in myself although I won this year. I’ll work twice as hard next year.” This is the mark of a superstar and a true champion. The Bronco golfers, Vincent Reid, Andre Springs, Randy Combs, Wally Harris, Clyde Harris, and Dennis Williams dominated the All- CIAA Golf team. Coach Walker is a shoo-in for “Coach-of-the-Year” honors in CIAA golfdom. Next year, the Broncos will still be the team to beat, with Andre Springs leading the way. Defense Shines In Grid Spring Drills Trying to improve on a great ’75 record of 7-3, football coach Ray McDougal put his players through their annual spring drills recently. When everything was over McDougal felt the defense was the story. With the loss of Eli Tatum and Michael Owens from the backfield through academic ineligibility, McDougal is trying to find the right combo in the backfield. Defensively, McDougal pointed out Dave Jones, 6-2, 220 pound defensive end as the man who will be keying to stop the run for us. Quarterback Carlos Bailey was used for the most part in the drills. However, McDougal used about six signal-callers for the game. The defense seems, however, to still be the story. Several players who appear to be ready are Ike Hall, Harold Little, Calvin Stephens, Tony Reid, and Willie Gray. On offense, running backs Keith Robinson, Jimmy Lee, William Bumpers, and William Hogg appear ready. But they must move stalwarts from last season Chris Barfield, Marshall McRae and Eric Johnson which currently forms the backfield nucleus for Mc Dougal. James Braswell, a 6-1 220- pound running back who just completed a three-year hitch in the Army, is expected to see action next fall. McDougal feels that passing will be one of the strong points of the upcoming season. The Bronco coach has already signed three players. They are Randolph Newkirk of Wallace, 6-2, 250 pounds; Kenneth Dunn of Wallace, 6-2, 215, and Ernest Hawkins, of Weldon, 6-1, 253.
