Chancellor Charles “A” Lyons, Jr.
FSV Administrator Selected For
Fellowship Program
Chancellor Charles “A”
Lyons, Jr. of Fayetteville
State University (N.C.)
recently announced that r.
Ronald Smith, Assistant to the
Provost and Vice-Chancellor
for Academic Affairs at FSU,
has been awarded an
American Council on
Education (ACE) fellowship
for the 1976-77 academic year.
The chancellor made the
announcement after receiving
the notification from Dr.
Roger W. Heyne, President of
the American Council on
Education in Washington,
D.C.
Smith was one of forty
fellows, nominated by
presidents or chancellors of
colleges and universities,
selected each year in nation
wide competition and there
were over 200 nominations for
the 1976-77 year.
He has served at FSU
since August 1975 and
received his undergraduate
training at Florida A&M
University, the Master’s from
Northeastern Illinois
University, and the Ph.D from
Purdue University.
Dr. Smith,prior to coming
FSU, held positions at Nor
theastern Illinois University,

The “A” in the middle
initial stands for ACTION.
And that is what he’s
produced since coming to
Fayetteville State University
in 1969.
But the significant thing
about Dr. Charles “A” Lyons,
Jr., Chancellor of FSU, is that
he has, with the help of very
dedicated workers, smoothly
directed the institution into its
100th Year of operation.
Therefore, the August 12
fall faculty-staff conference
opening is by no means a “ho-
hum” affair.
The beginning of the 1976-
77 academic year is
significant in that it is the
Centennial Year of the second-
oldest state supported
university of higher learning
in North Carolina.
Most importantly,
however. Chancellor Lyons
has perhaps, during his eight-
year span, converted some
“non-believers” when it

comes to outstanding
leadership ability.
No doubt there have been
times when the winds of
adversity were very strong in
his face. But the FSU leader
has kept the faith and here we
are starting the 100th Bir
thday of a grand institution.
Newcomers, just take a
quick look around the campus.
The beautiful buildings and
landscaping didn’t happen
overnight. It took strong
leadership and we have it here
at FSU.
The $Multi-Million Butler
Learning Center, The Con
tinuing Education Center, and
a modern dormitory, are just
some of the things already
here. And more is in store for
the next 100 years.
So, Welcome to FSU, an
“ACTION” Campus, a Cen
tennial Campus, and a Bi-
Centennial Campus-All in
one.

The Voice wishes to
