Henderson) 2 July 1974 - Dr. Charles “A” Lyons, Jr., Chancellor of Fayetteville State University, called together some fifty prominent and influential citizens of Fayetteville recently in the campus Student Center for the purpose of “planning the role of the University in the Fayetteville community and southeastern North Carolina.” Chanclelor Lyons opened the conference by stating that the primary purpose of the meeting was to share ideas about higher education and its resources as it affects FSU. “I envision that Fayet teville State University can be developed into a regional university with un dergraduate and graduate level offerings. The two main ingredients necessary for affecting change are planning and total community in volvement,” Chancellor Lyons stated. Henderson) WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEAD SUCCUIftBS Miss Lauraetta Janet Taylor, successful head coach of Fayetteville State (NC) University and Assistant Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, died Sunday, March 6, in Fayetteville, NC. She was 60. Miss Taylor, Born April 30, 1916 in Charlotte, later moved to Wilson, North Carolina, came to FSU (then UNC BOARD OF April 1977 ~ the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System made a two-day visit to the campus GOVERNORS VISIT CAMPUS of Fayetteville State University during April 7-8. The current Chairman of the Board of Governors is William A. Johnson of Lillington; Mrs. Howard Holderness, Greensboro, is Vice-Chairman and Dr. E. B. FSU, 98-year old in stitution, will celebrate its centennial year in 1977 and Chancellor Lyons stated that “southeastern North Carolina deserves a fairer share of the higher educational dollar in North Carolina.” The University of North Carolina Board of Governors is seeking to make the university system more responsive to community and regional needs,and by calling in a widely represen slice of the bus educational, military civic leadership of Fayetteville communit; planning sessions. She attended Barber- Scotia College, Concord, NC and received the BS degree from North Carolina A & T State University. Miss Taylor later obtained the Master of Arts degree from Columbia University and did further study at Yale University and the University of Pittsburgh. She was named CIAA “Coach-of-the-Year” in 1974- 75 when her team finished with a sparkling 18-2 mark. Miss Taylor’s teams won over 90 games during her coaching career at FSU while dropping only fifteen. Although FSU women’s team did not participate as a varsity club before the early 70’s, Miss Taylor had already guided her teams to a 43-3 record against outside competition. Her teams participated in every CIAA Women’s Tourney (Runners-up Twice) with tte exception of the past season.
