(Photo by Roy K;iuffin) The CIAA Rewards Its Scholar Athletes H.VMPTOX, VA. -- The scholarship committee of the CIAA has granted postgraduate scholarships to three outstanding young men. This is the initial award of this nature. One thousand dollar scholarships were awarded to Lawrence Carnigie of Hampton Institute, Martin Towe of Elizabeth City State University and Reginal Sherard of Winston-Salem State University. All were outstanding in academics as well as athletics. Reginald Sherard was a repeat winner of the John Chase Scholar - Athlete Award for the year 1977-78. Reggie is a championship wrestler, a member of the championship football team in addition to being an Honor student. He has already been accepted in Meharry IVledical School for the fall semester. FSU Student Lands Summer Job F.S.U. senior, Anthony Melvin, has been selected as an intern to work in State Department of Labor. Mr. Melvin’s primary duties will center around the preparation of a weekly inter departmental bulletin for that agency. His job location will be the North Carolina Ad ministration Building, Raleigh, ’ N.C. He leaves for Raleigh on the 30th of May. The Voice wishes to take this opportunity to congratulate Anthony on a job well done. The purpose of an in terview is for the interviewer to find out about you, the prospective employee. The employer wants to know about you in order to make a decision about hiring and you want the employer to know about you so that the decision will be favorable. Dr. Frank Endicott has done a report on college recruiting and within the report is something that will aid you. What specific goals, other by Lillie Booth According to a report by the Associated Press, March .30, 1978, Linda Williams, 18, became ‘’the first girl in the history of the University of Inter-scholastic League to play on a boys baseball team,” Wednesday, March 29, 1978, in Houston, Texas. Miss Williams, a black woman, was observed by at least 22 representatives of the press and about 300 spec tators. She admitted to being a little nervous about the situation. She had “worked out with the boys team until March when the UIL ruled that she was ineligible to play on the boys team because she was a girl. The UIL provides boys and girls programs but there Fayetteville State has had one of its strongest players on the all-conference team for the 1977-78 season. Edward “Question Ed” Jefferson from Emporia, Virginia, made the all conference team by averaging 21.8 points and 7 rebounds a game. Jefferson, a sophomore, came off a bad year of injuries as a freshman when he only averaged 7 points and 5 rebounds. The coaching staff believes that Jefferson, in only his second year as a Bronco, is one of the most than those related to your occupation, have you established for yourself for the next 10 years? 3. What motivates you to is no girls softball or baseball team at Wheatley.” An injunction was issued Monday by U.S. District Judge Woodrow Seals which opened the door for Miss Williams to play Wednesday. The injunction forced the UIL and Houston Independent School District to reinstate Miss Williams to the team. Incidentally, Miss Williams’ debut was not without incident. “She struck grounded out and walked in three appearances for the Wheatley Wildcats and was charged with an error that allowed four inning runs to score for Houston Sterling. Although Jef ferson does most of the scoring for the Broncos, he feels that its team ball that wins games and not the in dividual. Jefferson, who stands 6- 5'2 and weighs 190 pounds, serves two very important positions for the Broncos, one as co-captain and the other starting forward. Final Exam Schedule SPRING SEMESTER 1978 All Physical Education classes 100 to 109 and all Health Education classes (112) will have final examinations during the last class meeting. All Applied Music classes will have final examinations scheduled by the instructor prior to the regular examination period. Any conflict that arises from scheduling of final examinations which cannot be resolved between the student and the instructor, should be reported to the department chairperson immediately. Any student with more than three examinations in one day should report this fact to his department chairperson. Final examinations will be given for classes that meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday or any combination of days beginning on Monday as if these classes met on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; classes that meet on Tuesday, Wed nesday, and Friday, will be scheduled as if they met on Tuesday and Thursday. Classes that begin on the half-hour will be scheduled as if they began on the previous hour, i.e., a 9:30 Tuesday-Thursday class would be considered a 9:00 class and the examination will be given from 10:00-11:50 on Tuesday. May 2nd. Final examinations will be held in the classrooms where the classes regularly meet.
