Bronco Imports - Bronco Sports Owens Leads Broncoettes Past Hamptor Institute Katrina Owen’s 26 ^ int 27 rebound performance led Fayetteville to an 81-73 vic tory over the Lady Pirates of Hampton Instit\Ue. The Broncoettes jumped to an early 8-2 lead and never trailed. Ham’. ;n’s Cynthia Thompson, w 'o had a team high 20 point' scored 10 in the first half. However, her performanc .' was not enough to offset Owen’s over powering performance as the 6’4” All-CIAA performer scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Broncoettes to a ten point 45- 35 halftime lead. The second half saw Fayetteville lead by as many as 13 points before Hampton closed the gap near the end of the game only to lose by eight. Since her return to the Broncoette lineup, K.O. (as Owens is called) has been nothing sliort of spectacular. In the nine games in which she has played, the Broncoettes are 6-3 losing only to an un defeated Louisburg squad, a strong Peace College team and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division leader Winston-Salem State “K.O. adds a new dimension to our team,” states Head Coach Maceo Smith, “her shot blocking abilities cover up a lot of defensive mistakes and on offense she gives us a strong inside game.” Last year K.O. earned All-CIAA honors and this year her 23 points per game and 21.8 rebounds per game averages makes her a prime candidate for national as well as con ference honors. Broncoettes Shock. St. Augustine The Broncoettes of Fayetteville State University got revenge for an early season 98-62 drubbing at the hands of St. Augustine’s College. They defeated the Falconettes 91-79 Saturday in Broughton High School’s Gymnasium. The Broncoettes were led by Freshman Katrina Bullock’s 20 points. Bullock entered the game midway through the first half and hit five of her first six shots from the floor leading the Broncoettes to a 42-39 half time lead. For the Falconettes, Tonya Gibbons and Francine Watkins kept tlie Broncoettes from running away with it as they scored eight and nine points respectively. Outstanding Freshman Dignthia Morris chipped in eight first half THE VOICE Spealcing For Ourselves Vol. 33 No. 7 S: February 9, 1979 S Published twice monthly during the school year by students of Fayetteville State University. In the second half, St. Augustine could only get within three points of FSU as All-CIAA performers Angelia Newsome and Katrina Owens began to come on • Newsome and Owens finished with 17 points and Morris added 16. Another Freshman, Jessie Elmore, contributed 13 points and five steals. “This victory shows just how far we’ve come,” stated first year coach Maceo Smith. “St. Augustine’s Falconettes are one of the top teams in the league and this win builds our confidence for the upcoming CIAA Women’s Tournament. With the addition of K.O. (Owens) to go along with the already outstanding play of Newsome and Morris, I think we’re just beginning to peak.” Jefferson Leads FSU In One Sided Victory Over Shaw The FSU Broncos, led by the hot shooting of All-CIAA Ed Jefferson, defeated the Shaw University Bears 91-67. Jefferson hit on 11 of 18 shots from the field enroute to a game high 22 points Walter Harper scored on eight field goals and four of six foul shots for a team high 20 points for the losing team. Fayetteville burst out to an early 10-2 lead, highlighted by a mid-court lob from Charles Peoples to Kenny Howell which ended in a crowd stirring dunk, and never trailed. The Broncos then rode the scoring of Jefferson and guard James Jackson to a 47-32 half time lead. Harper kept the Bears close as he garnered 12 points in the first half. Shaw’s Keith Smith, the CIAA and NCAA Division II leading rebounder, fell victim to early foul trouble and had only two points and two rebounds at the half.
