SEPTEMBER 4, 1979 THE VOICE PAGET FSU’s Football Squad 1979 Football Outlook Last year the Broncos of Fayette’> 41e State University surprised a lot of people as they rebounded from an 0-3 start to finish tied for second with Virginia Union in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) with a 6-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 conference slate. This year the Broncos lose only 11 players to graduation (only eight started the whole year) but due to academic casualties and players leaving for personal reasons this year’s squad will be hard pressed to repeat last year’s accomplishments. Head coach Raymond McDougal feels he can count on 21 let- termen returning. The strength of this year’s squad is expected to be the defense anchored by a young aggressive linebacking corps made up of Anthony Freeman, Jerry Davis, Ronnie Oats and Don Andrews. Offensively the Broncos could be strongest in FSU’s Sports Information Director Receives Award James Threatt, Jr., Sports Information Director at Fayetteville State University, recently received an award for the “Most Im proved SID Program.” The award was presented at the CIAA Conference held in Norfolk, Virginia, July 27th - 30th. , Threatt joined FSU’s sports department in the fall of 1978. A 1978 graduate of Hampton Institute, Threatt serv^ as a student assistant in the sports information office. During his three year stint in this position, he made major contributions to the school’s football program, which has been recognized by the College Sports In formation Directors of America (CoSIDA) as being among the best in the nation. the backfield where quar terback Ed Davis and run- ningbacks Arthur Becton and Maverick Jackson return. Becton and Jackson teamed to form a very effective and explosive duo toward the end of last season and if they can pick where they left off, the running game will be much improved. Also the kicking game is expected to be strong with Bertie Wadford back to handle the punting chores nd last year’s leading scorer William Houston back kicking field goals and extra points. The weakness of the team may be the lack of big people on the offensive and defensive line. The defensive line returns intact but help is needed for reserves. The offensive line is greatly suf fering from the loss of All- CIAA center Lorenzo Grays and starting tackles Dwayne Murphy and Mutual Black Network All-America Burnis Travis. College football’s defending national co champion, Alabama, will take on Georgia Tech in a national telecast opening the 1979 season on SATURDAY, SEPT. 8 (4:30-8:00 p.m., EDT), on the ABC Television Network. Grambling, a perennial southern powerhouse coached by veteran Eddie Robinson, rolled to a 9-1-1 record last year and is expected to be a front-runner again in Division I-A A of the NCAA. Robinson, who is in his 38th year at Grambling, has compiled a 273-87-12 mark. Alcorn State, coached by Marino Casem who is in his 16th year, went 5-4-1 last year, including a hard-fought 13-22 defeat to Grambling. Grambling will be led into action by junior quarterback Mike WiUiams, the younger brother of former Tiger All- America Doug Williams, and fullback Robert Parham. Alcorn State will counter with sophomore QB Sherode Green and senior fullback Otis Wonsley. Grambling leads in the series, 17-7, since records of the series between the schools were first kept in 1952. I w (Photo by Tony Threatt) FOOTBALL ROSTER NO.
