Page 3 THE VO Meet The New SGA Officials For The ’80-’81 Academic Year by Billy C. Hopkins, Jr. News Editor President — Mr. Roy Davenport I recently had the honor of interviewing Mr. Roy Davenport, the newly elected President of the Student Government Association for the 1980-1981 academic year. Roy is a senior from Cartersville, Ga. and is majoring in Math and Computer Science. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Vice-President of the University of N.C. Association of Student Governments (U.N.C.A.S.G.), and a three-year player on the Bronco football team. In addition, he has been involved with the F.S.U. Life Skills Program. I found my interview with Mr. Davenport to be quite meaningful and I would like to share it with yo. Voice; What plans does your administration have for the 1980-1981 academic year? Davenport: We have many plans. I would like to answer your question by pointing out some of our goals. Our first goal is to unify the SGA. After that, we’d liketo try to unify the student body with the administration. With a total unification of F.S.U. we would like to branch out to the community. Some of the projects that we would like to implement in doing so would be to get involved with high school students. I would like for the students at F.S.U. to gooutto the high schoolsto talk with some of the athletes and try to convince them to “get into the books”. Another project that we would like to implement is a voter registration drive. We would like to start the drive on our campus and then proceed to get people registered in the community. Voice: In what ways will you stimulate the academic morale of the students? Davenport: We will try to make the students aware of what's going on in the world today. This awareness should stimulate the students to “get into the books”. Voice: How will you bridge the gap of respect that the students have lost for the faculty, staff, and administra tion? Davenport: This will be hard to do, but I hope that our accomplishments in the Student Government will help to bring some respect. Once the students have developed some confidence in us then we will get into the adminis tration and find out what was the problem and why the respect was lost. The lack of respect deals with the communication gap on our campus. Hopefully, we can bridge this gap and develop respect between the students and administration. Voice: In what ways will you motivate the students to attend “Live and Learn” programs. Convocation, test- taking workshops, and various programs sponsored by the Lyceum Committee? Davenport: This would go back to the idea of awareness. Most of the students aren’t aware that they should attend the programs and they don’t realize that these programs are a learning experience. We would like to better the communication about these programs and make them more interesting so the students will want to participate. Voice: How will you deal with the drastic problem of apathy that exists on our campus? Davenport: Because of a lack of communication between the students and the administration, I feel that most students think the administration has let us down. Since being in this office, I have talked with several key administrators and have found this feeling to be more of a fantasy than fact. We would liketo deal with this problem by improving the communication gap that exists on our campus. Voice: Mr. Davenport, what do you hope to accomplish as President of the Student Government Association? Davenport: Just to try to unify the student body and the administration is my ultimate goal. Mr. Davenport concluded our interview by stating that the theme for the upcoming year will be entitled “Back Together Again”. He stated that a lack of unity and communication has been F.S.U.’s problem and by dealing with these will help to bring us “back together again”. Vice-President — Mr. Craig Dumas THE VOICE Mr. Craig Dumas is a Senior from Hamlet, N.C. He is majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. Craig is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fra ternity, Inc., the Men's Dorm Council, and the Varsity football and track teams. He is currently serving as president of the student senate. Mr. Dumas was recently interviewed by The Voice and here are his responses to my questions. Voice: What activities do you plan to implement for the upcoming year? Dumas: Other than the traditional activities that are planned for the upcoming year such as homecoming, etc., we plan to implement more "awareness" programs to get more black speakers to cultivate the minds of the students. We also have several educational activities planned. Hope fully we can get these activities planned and going because I would like to see more educational activities. Voice: In what ways could the student body be unified? Dumas: The key word to unifying the students is "awareness". The students aren't aware of what's happening at F.S.U. By making them more aware of what's going on, I feel that this would offer a boundary for them to become unified. If the unification is established, then the next step is to shorten the gap between the students and the administration. Voice: How do you plan to make your office more accessible to the students? Dumas: My door will always be open for suggestions that any student might have. Any ideas that they might have, I will be willing to listen and I hope to implement their ideas. I would like for the students to come into my office so we can talk one- on-one about their ideas. In this way, I can get a better view of their concerns. Voice: Please give your overall view of Fayetteville State University; for example, student life, academic standings, etc. Dumas: There is a very large degree of "apathy" on our campus. There is a very apathetic attitude by the students. I think there should be more input by the students in the activities on campus. They have a tendency to let things go by and not pay attention to what's going on. This stems back to the idea of "awareness". As far as academics are con cerned, it really depends on the individual. F.S.U. October, 1980 A Great Inspiration cont. from page 1 a sense of knowing a guid ing principleof histeaching- KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.” The photograph that ap peared on the program for Dr. Moore’s Encomium was entitled “The Creature of Adam,” by Michelangelo. This was a very appropriate photograph because it was an aspect of Dr. Moore’s teaching. I can proudly say that Dr. J.C. Moore was himself a “unique creation,” however, I must sadly say good-bye to a man who was indeed a “Great Inspi ration.” A Letter To Students conl. from page 1 He was an eternal optimist who believed with hard work and dedication things could be made right and we could succeed in building a human family of all mankind. This is the legacy that he leaves us all, regardless of our race or station in life. What you do with that legacy is up to you. His race is over. His reward is assured. For most of us the race has just begun. Yet, I have to believe the "Doc will always be there in the background, cheering us on! if you need extra income, but want to choose your own hours and days, call me at 867- 2613. offers a good under graduate program and if the individual has enough initiative, he can grasp the total output that the University offers. It depends on what the individual wants to make himself. Voice: What do you hope to accomplish as Vice-President of the Student Government Association? Dumas: I hope to have a part in a "total"accom- plishment at F.S.U. I hope there is a "total" unification of the student body. My personal goal is to make the students aware that I am concerned and that I am going to play a big part in spearheading every thing in the student government. In the past, the Vice-President's office has been more of a supportive office. I plan to continue supporting the other officers in the SGA, but I also plan to make the office more effective in dealing with student concerns.
