Tau Gamma Delta

pledging a sorority, think
about Tau Gamma Delta
(TGD) first,
Tau Gamma Delta
Sorority is one of the
newest sororities here at
Fayetteville State Univer
sity. It was founded at
Lewis Business College,
Detroit, Ml by a group of
students underthe name of
Phi Gamma Delta in 1942.
The name was changed to
Tau Gamma Delta on
October 17, 1951.
"The purpose of this
Sorority is to promote
higher ideals and establish
reputable standards for
growth and harmony of
true sisterhood of the
world; to aid in education
of worthy students desiring
business or professional
training, and to further
community activities."
Motto: Illuminating the
Pathway. Colors: Pink &
Blue. Flower: The Pink
Carnation.
This organization is
located on other campuses
such as: Winston-Salem
University, North Carolina
Central, and A & T State
University.
The sorors here on
campus are Clementine
Artis, Emma Brown,
Sharon Bryant, Virginia
Morrison, Precellia Pratt
and Gail Sutton.

Houston Thigpen were
both honored for their
services to Fayetteville
State University at a
retirement dinner during
the summer.
Both were members of
FSU Chestnut Library and
both were active in other
campus affairs.
Mrs, Smith is active in
campus affairs, civic,
religious and professional
organizations. Committee
assignments include;
Chairman of the University
Hospitality Commmittee,
member of the Provost and
Vice Chancellor's Advisory
Council, the University
Senate, the Academic
Affairs Council, the North
Carolina Librarian's
Advisory Council, which
she has served as
Chairperson forthe Library
Cooperation Committee
and presently serves as a
member of the Committee
on Communication and
numerous other standing
and ad hoc committees.
She chairs a task force for
graduate planning at
Fayetteville State Univer
sity.
Mrs. Thigpen has
directed freshman orienta
tion for a number of years
and from this venture, she
has helped broaden the
scope of library policies
and structure of the
orientation.
Mrs. Thigpen has
updated and published the
Library Handbook and the
"Library Bookmark." She
is compiling the papers of
Dr. J.W. Seabrook which
were donated to the
Library by his widow, Mrs.
Mae Seabrook.
Facets Magazine
Facets, a literary
magazine published by
The Poetry Society of
Fayetteville State Univer
sity, has been termed as
being highly succesful.
The magazine is the first
literary publication of the
school. It included poetry
and short stories, all
written by students, faculty
members and other
members of the University
Family.
The publication was
made possible by funds
from the Student Govern
ment Association, FSU
Print Shop, FSU Drama
Guild, and other area
banks. With funds from the
sale of the magazine, the
group plans to publish one
or more issues next school
term.
The magazine's cover
was designed by a talented
art student here at FSU,
Miss Gail Peaten. Ms.
Peaten's work has received
numerous awards and has
been displayed locally.
The Poetry Society,
known as Facets, is a
literary group orga”n1zed
during the first semester of
the 1979-80 school term.
The aim of the group is to
promote literary excell
ence by presenting and
sharing literary ideas with
other members. Although
poetry was dealt with
specifically, short stories
and other literary works
were discussed by the
group.
The first officers of the
group included: Lillie
Booth, President; Deborah
Hicks, Vice-President;
Bonnie Painter, Secretary;
and Josph Gordon,
Treasurer. Dr. and Mrs.
Richard Sharp and Dr.
Edward McShane serve as
advisors to the group.
F.S.U. Graduate

Bobby Speight, a 1980
graduate of F.S.U., will be
working in Boston,
Massachusetts as a Data
Processor for Liberty
Mutual.
He is the son of Mrs.
Geneva Forbes. The
Placement Office at
Fayetteville State Univer
sity assisted Bobby in
getting his job.

Paul H. Smith, Assistant
Professor of Accounting at
Fayetteville State Univer
sity, attended the annual
meeting of the American
Accounting Association in
Boston during the week of
August 11-15. He was
instrumental in the
development of the Public
Interest Accounting
Special Section of the AA.
Accounting in the
public interest involves
monitoring the impact of
the accounting profession
in its' role of serving the
needs of the whole society.
Development of meaning
ful qualitative (quality of
life) reporting in the public
interest is one of the major
concerns of this newly
formed group.

“A Model In Review”
The new president of
The Essence of Beauty
Modeling Club is Kenneth
E. Johnson. Kenneth is
from the town of Rowland,
N.C. and a graduate of
Rowland High School.
After graduation he
traveled to New York City
where he became very
interested in the world of
fashion and modeling.
Entering Fayetteville State,
Kenneth put his interest
into a solid form by
becoming a model in The
Modeling Club.
Mr. Johnson is very
active on campus and
holds membership in many
organizations, such as a
member of Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity Inc., a F.S.U.

Mr. Johnson has goals
such as helping the club
reach professionalism. He
also plans to induce
several dimensions of
fashions, such as beauty,
charm and charisma, along
with a touch of class from
both male and female
models.
To become a model,
one has to have certain
qualifications. The main
qualifications are con
ducting oneself as a lady or
a man at all times and
having the utmost interest
in yourself as well as in
fashions.
