Page 12 THE VOICE November, 1980 * Press the Point* Monthly Commentary by Derrick K. Eddie, S.E. Joe Valentine is a superb quarterback. There is no doubt about it. In his debut in the CIAA, he displayed a lot of stamina, skill and precision in executing numerous plays and trying to get the offense in motion. At Norfolk State University, he showed his quarter- backing ability before 19,500 fans at Foreman Field. He rushed for 72 yards with his biggest gain in the 1st half, 18 yards around the left side of the Norfolk State defense. Tom Morris, head coach, states that "Joe is a very talented young man, and becauseofsomeofthe problems that we've been having with our offensive line and some of the things that we haven't been able to adjust to quickly enough on the field, we haven't been able to exploit all of his abilities. He is a very talented young man who is going to do great things here at Fayetteville State if we can keep him protected and healthy." Some people tend to forget the most important things about Joe Valentine: he is a freshman and has three more years to make improvements. Being a native of Fayetteville, he graduated in 1980 from Seventy-First High School where he gained consider able experience for State 4A-Division III play. Valentine has the respect of his teammates as well as this sports editor. FSU vs Johnson C. Smith University Veterans Memorial Stadium- Charlotte College: Johnson C. Smith University (1-6-1, 1- 9-1) Location: Charlotte, North Carolina. Nickname: Golden Bulls. Colors: Blue & Gold. Stadium: Vfeterans Memorial, Capacity - 24,000. Head Football: Mr. Willie Harris, 2-10; 2years- Athletic Director, Mr. Eddie McGirt. Outlook: Positive signs emerged from Johnson C. Smith University's spring football drills that indicate the Golden Bulls program is being resurrected to life. The addition of a sixteen station weight training room is a needed boost to the athletic program. Several transfers will bolster the line-up including offensive line man Kenny Jones from Miles College, Jim Penny from Lees McCrae and defensive end Daryl Beauford from Maryland- Eastern Shore. Jeff Coan and Ray Ellis, the two most effective blockers last year return to anchor the offensive line. In the skill position, AII-NAIA-26 wide receiver Nate McDowell will team with massivetight end Ed McNeely and Larry Disher to form one of the better receiving corps in the conference. Johnson C. Smith's 1980 football schedule offers little relief from the 1979 season when the Golden Bulls played seven of the pre-season top twenty Black College teams in the country. Coach Harris' crew has gained experiencethe hard way and will be in a position to pull several upsets this year. Look out for the Golden Bulls of J.C.S.U. this year. 1980-1981 Fayetteville State University’s Women’s Basketball Schedule for the CIAA Time Date Opponent 7:00 Nov. 14 Winston-Salem State Univ. 7:00 Nov. 17 Norfolk State University 7:00 Nov. 22 N.C.
