Page 8 THE VOICE November, 1980 The Literary Voice Fashions - Music - Poetry Change In Music ^ Personal by Carolyn Robinson Music Writer Society has changed. Hairstyles have changed, moral standards are changing and so has gospel music. From observing various artists within the last four or five years, I've noticed a change in the style of music. Today we have switched from the old traditional hymns to the contemporary. The con temporary uses more instruments. The piano, organ, orchestra, drums, etc., for instance "Amazing Grace" is exactly the same song that was sung by our ancestors, but today it has been modernized. Even James Cleveland has modernized his music. Therefore, music reflects society. Does it play a part in your life? Have we lost the touch? The apprecia tion? Should we let this happen? Stay tuned for more viewpoints on the Chang ing Styles of music. Beauty Club by Debra Pettiway "Facial features aren't the most important thing in being a model, stated Mr. Johnson, but it's how you groom and display yourself." The club's motto is: Beauty is in the eye of the beholded, which inspires each and every model. The club displays unity and togetherness, along with a sense of belonging. Mrs. Theresa Carr is the new advisor for The Essence of Beauty Model ing Club. She has had some previous experience in fashions and Mr. Johnson feels that she will be a tremendous help to the club. The Essence of Beauty Club future plans include more performances on and off campus. Mr. Johnson stated that "The first show of the Fall Semester is scheduled for October 16, 1980 in the Butler Little Theatre. More information will be given at a later date." View of Fashions by Debra Pettiway Miss Cheryl Baber of Durham, NC is a transfer student from Fisk Univer sity, Nashville, Tennessee. She is majoring in Psychol ogy. She became interested in fashions while attending Fisk University. Miss Baber has always liked clothes, cosmetics and keeping up with the latest styles. She states "I really get into Sassoon, but I'm par tial to Gloria Vanderbilt and Christian Dior Miss Baber has never modeled, but has had dreams and desires in doing so. Miss Barber elaborated on the fact that fashions are nothing more than keeping up with new styles and color coordinates. Any one who can match-up clothes and their colors, along with making sure they’re worn properly can be considered fashionable. More and more stu dents on FSU's campus are becoming interested in fashions. Miss Baber is just one out of several students at FSU, whose interest lies in fashion. She ends the interview with "I don't profess to be the most well-dressed person on campus. I'm only stat ing the mere fact that I, too, am interested and will al ways be interested in ap pearing well-groomed and up to date with the styles! Flip Side by L. Craig Johnson Album of the week, Larry Graham, "One in a Million". After three poorly re ceived albums in as many years Larry Graham has finally returned to the lime light and this time he's bringing gold with him. His hit single "One in a Million, You" is stuck in the top tens of both sound and pop charts bringing Larry Gra ham success deserved by a man of his great talent. “One in a Million’s” success is no doubt attri butable to the fact that Larry is finally demonstrating to the world that he is not only a talented writer, producer and arranger but also a damn good singer. True, to a Graham fan, what I am saying is a matter of record. But to those of the listening populace at large Larry Graham has been “that funky Bass Player" we will all remember that from Sly Stone’s better days. But “One in a Million” will no doubt bring recognition to Graham’s voice; I mean I don’t know if you’ve noticed it, but this man can sing. Songs to look outforon the rest of the album include “Sweetheart”, Stand up and Shout about Love, Sunshine, music and you and "There's some thing about your love." "One in a Million, you" is produced by Larry Graham and is availableon Warner Brothers, records and tapes. Rated ***" Record Ratings *No way **Worth a listen, but don't Buy it ***Not Great, but worth having ****Real Good *****Pawn something and buy this record; Record of the week. All night Thing by Invisible Man's Band. Critics Choice; Album— “Rocks, Pebbles and Sand” by Stanley Clarke. 45— "All Night Thing" by Invisible Man's Band. Music Review Michael Henderson-Wide Receiver (Arista) Mr. Henderson seems to be wanting this decade to be the best ever after putting together his current album, Wide Receiver, the music on the Lp. clearly speaks for itself. The big hit no doubt is the title cut, that will keep the sexy dancers on the floor doing everything they have learned. The other cuts to look out for are "What I'm feeling", "Prove It", and "You''re My Choice". Beware of Michael Henderson in the 80's. Teddy Pendergrass-TP (Philadelphia International) Get ready to enter the world of total ecstacy, when you hear the Teddy Bears' latest Lp. The midas touch of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff is still around, as they keep Pendergrass going up and up. "Love T.K.O." is headed for big things, along with Peabo Bryson's big hit "Feel the Fire". On "Feel the Fire" the ladies man teams up with the "Wiz" kid Stephanine Mills to show the world how hot the Fire really is. As long as the Teddy Bear is around, there will be sweet music. Rick James-Garden of Love (Motown) Clearly on his way to becoming the musical industries biggest attraction. The punk-funk is at it's best on the cut "Big Time". Other suggested cuts from the Mayor of Stone City's latest Lp. are "Summer Love", "Mary-Go- Round", "Island Lady" and "Gettin It On". James loves to funk up the place, so while checking out the King of punk- funk, don't feel bad when funky things suddenly start happening. Cinema by: Craig Johnson Film of the Week: Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie Love Rating by L. Craig Johnson When was the last time you really had a good laugh? If you can't remem ber then let me direct you to one of the funniest movies to come out of Hollywood since "Richard Pryor, Live". The movie is, of course, "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie". It is a rollicking, fast paced, and occasionally gross sequel to Cheech Marin's and Thomas Chong’s 1978 sleeper success "Up in Smoke". "Next Movie" takes us through the lives of two very wild California wild- lifes, named, imaginatively, Cheech and Chong. Cheech is something, like a cross between Low rider and a macho slob. Chong comes over like a time lost hippie who rides his motorcycle in the livng room. Whatthesetwowild- men accomplish as a source of comedic relief is nearly unbelievable. They run the gamut from blowing a car up in the middleof trafficto being kidnapped by drug crazed aliens from outer space. All the while glibly supplying some of the best one-liners ever spoken. Case in point; Cheech, Why don't you get a job?; Chong, I already have a job.; Cheech, Oh, Yeah? Doing what? Rollin' dope? Chong, Least it's steady work. I find that neat. And it goes on during the whole movie. Good lines, well delivered, and great char acterizations: Hence, a 4 star rating. "Cheech and Chong's Next Movie" is funny, noth ing describes it better. It is written by none other than Cheech and Chong and directed by Thomas Chong, who on his first directing job came through flawlessly. “Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie” is playing at the Cross Creek Cinema, Cross Creek Mall. Movie of the Week: The Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields. Critics Choice: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Intercourse by Evelyn Elaine Jones Aries Love is a powerful feeling which captures the heart and the mind it's not to be mistaken for granted because When it does it's always your heart that gets broken By that special someone that you love. It's a song so sad and low it hymns, rhythms of explosion When you're with the one that you love. Look here comes that jive ass brother trying to run that game down on me talking about he loves me when all he wants to do is to go to bed with me but check this out when I become pregnant and the mother of your child will you marry me or leave me for another with no money and your child to bear. Have intercourse with me have intercourse my mind!!
