Pre-Season Outlook 1980
By Derrick K. Eddie
Sports Editor
The only thing that I can say
to FSU’s opponents this year is
that FSU will be present for all
of their games. What they will
do on the floor will be a
different thing.
Coach Jake Ford, in his
second year as the FSU mentor
will floor one of the smallest, if
not the smallest varsity
basketball teams ever in the
history of Fayetteville State
University. Last season’s ve
terans Jeff Ballard and Ed
Jefferson are gone from the
15-13 team who defeated such
powerhouses as Norfolk State
and Johnson C. Smith and gave
last year’s CIAACage Tourney
Champions Virginia Union a
run for the money in the
regular season game and the
heartstopping double overtime
quarterfinal game in Norfolk,
Va.
Enough about last year, FSU
will have their characteristic
running game together with
such key guards as Charles
Peoples, a 5’5”, 160 pound
Senior from Newport News,
Va., and “Mr. Showtime,”
Bonny McNeil a 5’7”, 155
pound Junior from Durham, N.
C., who has the ability to make
any person or even an entire
team wish he wasn’t around.
Junior sensation Richard Robin
son (Mr. Radar), a 6’2”, 174
pound guard from Orangeburg,
S. C., should add excellent
field goal percentages to an
already high-scoring overall
team.
The forwards are young
overall since only one senior
returns, “The Doctor of Dunk,’’
6’7’’ Steven Mims from
Fayetteville, N. C., who will be
or has to be a definite factor on
the boards this year. James
Knight, a solid 6’4”, 185 pound
Junior from Newport News,
Va., also, should be counted on
heavily this year. Freshman
forward Mike Cunningham, a
6’6”, 210 pounder from
Memphis, TN, should see
considerable action in his debut
in the CIAA.
Now, let’s discuss that ever
so popular position of center.
This year at Fayetteville State
University was have two
freshmen centers, and one
sophomore center. Expect me
to go on naming more? Well,
surprise!, we don’t have
anymore centers.
Two freshmen centers, Joel
Harris, 6’6’’, 215 pounds from
Pensacola, Fla., and Lanier
Hobbs, 6’7”, 220 pounds, from
Louisville, Ken., will get a
“fresh” start on CIAA
opponents this year.
The FSU program is creating
some interest this year because
John Marshall, Athletic Direc
tor has signed a tentative
contract with BET (Black
Entertainment Television) to
televise the confrontation be
tween Fayetteville State Uni
versity and Elizabeth City State
University on January 28, 1981.
In the past, FSU has had a
tradition of defeating higher or
nationally ranked teams when
they come to Fayetteville. This
year, the tradition will probably
continue as hot rivals Living
stone, Johnson C. Smith,
Winston-Salem State, Hampton
Instititute, and Elizabeth City
are all ranked higher than the
Broncos and all have to play the
Broncos one time in Fayette
ville.
Miss Black College Day
(Continued from page nine)
her arms filled with long--
stemmed roses. Surrounded by
her court, she stepped forward
to accept this new leadership
role.
They were led to a
convertible limousine to start
the unforgettable journey to the
steps of the United States
Capitol. Miss Black College
Day '80, her court, and her
fellow queens led the way for
the most spectacular demon
stration of unity and brother
hood since the 60’s.
The scene on Monday,
Sept. 29, may have sparked
memories of the past, but those
who made history that day were
pointed towards the future.
