Page Twelve — THE VOICE — Monday, December 1,1980 *4-¥■¥■ Snort's Press The Point By Derrick Eddie Sports Editor FSU’s Women’s Outlook The FSU women’s basketball team is in a predica ment. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not talking about a predicament in talent and experience of players. FSU has a new coach for the third year in a row. Yvonne Edwards in her first year as FSU mentor, in herits a 16-4 women’s team. In 1978 the FSU women’s Broncos won the CIAA championship in Norfolk, then under Head Coach Maceo C. Smith. However, last year under new mentor Robert Henderson they were not as successful. This year, Yvonne Edwards has inherited the most powerful women’s team in the CIAA. No seniors are on this team so it looks as if Ms. Edwards come to Fayetteville State University fresh from graduate school at Indiana University at Bloo mington. The lady Broncos have a 26-game schedule this year, included in this 26-game schedule as such pow erhouses as Norfolk State University, Livingston Col lege and North Carolina A & T State University. Returning from the 16-4 team from last year is just about everybody including such stars as Jesse El more a 6’0 forward from Lofan, W. Va. and Dianthia Morris 5’10” forward from Lawrence, N. J. Coach Ed wards returns an excellent guard potential as 5’7” 160 Concetha “CC” Smith from Norfolk, 'Va. is back. Also Veronica Stewart a 5’9” 125 pound guard from a burrough of the Big Apple, Queens return to give Coach Edwards no problem in the front court. Gold Bowl History From The Gold Bowl Report The year was 1976, 200 years since America’s freedom, and that year brought the first unleashing of a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference club in post-season competition — thus; this game was fittingly dubbed the Bicenn- tenial Bowl. Since that historical time, the game has been a sparkling event, and renamed the'Gold Bowl. The 1979 con frontation between South Carolina State and Norfolk State earmarked Gold Bowl III, and both participants had passed this way before. In 1976’s Bicentennial Bowl, South Ca rolina State’s runningback Ricky Ander son bulldogged through Norfolk’s de fense for 187 yards and two touchdowns. leading the MEAC champions to a 26-10 victory. The Bulldogs also got a touch down by quarterback Jake Prather and a Malcolm Montgomery field goal. LarRue Harrington scored a touchdown for Nor folk in the second quarter, and the Spar tans recorded a third quarter field goal. December 3,1977 matched conference champions South Carolina State and un beaten Winston-Salem in the first annu al Gold Bowl. WSSU took the lead on an Arrington Jones one-yard run, but SCS tied it up in that first period when quar terback Nate Rivers broke 64 yards for a touchdown. The difference in the game was a 25-yard, third quarter field goal by Montgomery, giving the Bulldogs the 10- 7 win. West I Conference Standings JV Basketball Schedule Conf.
